But if I buy a car I do NOT expect to be tracked by gas stations, auto repair shops, tire manufacturers, drive-thru restaurants, etc, etc, etc. Why should it be any different with computers and browsers?

Here's a BBC report from way back in 2006, 1 CCTV camera per 14 people, I doubt if that percentage has decreased! Researchers highlight "dataveillance", the use of credit card, mobile phone and loyalty card information, and CCTV. Monitoring of work rates, travel and telecommunications is also rising.
