Hello,

I do I get rid of this USB icon from Taskbar and only activate it when a USB device/external storage is connected ?

Is there a registry setting to get rid of this panel and Icon from Taskbar ?

Ant help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you tried any of these methods?

I would stay away from the Appuals link unless you are experienced in editing the registry.

See my signature for a backup solution if you don't have one already.

Hello

Thank you for the response but I DO want the Icon to show when a USB or external storage device is connected to the PC and stay hidden when no devices are connected. This doesn't happen on the stock MSDN image so there must be a setting somewhere, registry is always preferable.

This is not actually a USB icon specifically but icon for device and printers that also shows external storage/USB device in the list. I just want it show external storage and USB devices and stay hidden for the rest of the devices. Is that possible somehow ?

Use this to explore all aspects of USB drives/peripherals connected to your PC.

View any installed/connected USB device on your system

There are a ton of settings that might help you.

Did you make any changes in your BIOS regarding external drives, or AHCI? As it was a long time ago and I can't remember what I changed but I made some changes in my BIOS that made my PC exhibit similar behavior.

Is your printer connected on the computer via USB?

I have the impression that you have a very old version of Windows 10. Type winver in the Search area and press Enter. Take a screenshot of what you see.

Does the panel stay visible or only the icon?

The Icon. But this behavior is not default to Windows. I'm using modified Windows, so I assume the scripts I used for modifications did something to the settings. So there must be a setting for it.

Thanks Admin. No, I didn't make any changes to my BIOS. And thank you for the utility, pretty handy stuff. I din't know it existed. Thank you for braining this to my attention.

NO printers. I have Windows 10 Pro 20H2 19042.631.

As Dr. M suspected, your Windows Version is way out of date. Your version ceased to be serviced May 10, 2022 unless it's an Enterprise, Education, or IoT Enterprise product. If so, try Windows Update. If not re-install Windows Create installation media for Windows - Microsoft Support

Thank you for the response Corday. The same behaviour occurs on 2019 LTSC updated with latest security patch. Out of curiosity, I installed 2019 LTSC without any updates, build 17763.316 and I don't see this behavior on it. I still suspect there's a setting for it somewhere.

Thanks again for taking interest in my issue, your help is highly appreciated.

Years ago Microsoft began discouraging end users from writing scripts vis a vis the OS and instead use Group Policy for the chore involved. It might not be possible to overcome all the gliches, but hopefully someone has a better idea than yours truly as I've never authored a script, but have used 3rd party ones.

What I would try is an in-place upgrade. This will reinstall and update the operating system and fix any corruptions, without removing any file or program.
  • Go to this Microsoft page and under the title Create Windows 10 installation media press on Download tool now.
  • Save the tool on your Desktop and double click to run it.
  • On the License terms page, if you accept the license terms, select Accept.
  • On the What do you want to do page, select Upgrade this PC now, and then select Next.
  • Follow the instructions and select Keep personal files and apps, when you are asked to.
  • It might take a couple of hours, depending on your wifi speed connection, to install Windows 10. Your PC will restart a few times. Make sure you don’t turn off your PC.
  • After downloading and installing, the tool will walk you through how to set up Windows 10 on your PC.
