[SOLVED] How to fix windows update error Code 80073701 on windows 7?

Hey all, new poster here. Decided to start an account because I have seen the tremendous work you guys have done helping other users. I have 5 updates, that just will consistently fail to update, have looked online and can't seem to find a fix. Any insights or inputs would be great, thanks.

Ran the SFC fix tool, and this is what I got. Again, thank you so much for your help.
 
Windows Update Error Code 80073701. Persistent Problem.

So I noticed this problem for the past month now, and can't seem to find a solution to it. Everytime I get prompted to update Windows, the updates download, and I try installing the 5 updates, and they fail. I have tried to update them separately as well, nothing seems to work. Have searched online for solutions, and no one seems to know. I have ran the SFC Fix tool and this is the data I've obtained:SFCFix version 2.4.1.0 by niemiro.Start time: 2014-11-28 18:22:26.245

So there is clearly a problem. I am also having an impossible time uploading the zipped CBS.Log file for some reason. Any help you guys and gals can provide would be awesome. Thanks in advance!
 
Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Lets take a look into why SFC and SURT are detecting those errors first.

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this to your next post please.

I am sorry but when this many files are missing from the registry hive, it is not something we can fix. But the bigger question here is "why are all these files missing?" when it comes to this many missing registry files it can often be a sign of RAM failure.

Please follow the instructions for MemTest86+, for atleast 10 passes. Let me know the results.
 
Hey, I am currently not home. But I will check it as soon as I get home. So what can I do if it is the ram failing?
 
No worries :)

If the RAM is failing there is not much that can be done to repair the sticks them self, they will most likely need to be replaced :(.
 
By nothing happens, I mean, it's not even bootable. I've set it as primary boot device...and it just gives me the option to boot from my hard drive.
 
OK so I guess it was a problem with the memory stick I was trying to use. Memtest is currently running. Will keep you posted on results. Again, thank you so much for all your help!
