How to Fix "Microsoft Cabinet Maker has stopped working"

When my internet connection falls off and I go find and fix the problem I regularly get the message below telling me "Microsoft Cabinet Maker has stopped working." It isn't a fatal problem, just very annoying. I was wondering if anyone can tell me why it happens and how to fix it?

(BTW, my internet connection falls off three or four times a week and I believe I know the causes and I don't think there is much I can do about it.

First, our work group is organized around connectors that use our electrical lines as ethernet pathways. Would have been too expensive to wire the place with Cat 5 and we get performance better than what we would get if all was WiFi connected.

Second, because of our location, we use a provider that connects us through a remote line of site tower. Very strange situation. ComCast and others stop service about 8 blocks from our place and won't extend because it's only 200 homes and all lines are underground in this area. The best other service is 1 to 5 meg a second. With our currrent service, we get 30 up and 30 down, which still is pretty poor, but better than the alternatives.)

I read through the links. I use FireFox as a browser but I did note that IE 11 was still enabled, so I followed the instructions and disabled it, just in case.

Unfortunately, after a reboot same issue was present. I dove further into the links you provided and they suggested the potential for the Cabinet Maker issue to be caused by Visual Basic installation.

I do have Visual Basic installed so I attempted to follow links associated with the VB discussion in your links. As luck would have it, they were all 404, not found. So a dead end there.

Because the issue is irritating but not fatal I guess I will just leave it alone. Though I am still curious what purpose the Cabinet Maker serves. I am sure it must have something to do with making Cabinet files and that may be its association with VB, but I don't have any idea why this would interrupt the Internet Connection Troubleshooter.

There is not much in the way of info on Cabinet Maker (I admit, I didn't research for long) I suspect it has something to do with CAB files or Cabinet files and their building and extracting.

I am also puzzled why it interrupts the Internet Connection Troubleshooter.

I will look more as time permits. If you find anything out in the meantime, please share.

Edit/
Slight insight: can you solve this problem???-VBForums

Do you use VB? Or could you uninstall it with Revo Free, test, re-install if needed?

Your first link provided the insight that Cabinet Maker is associated with VB. I did not know that or certainly didn't remember it. I used to use VB a lot but not much in the past 4 years or so. Most of what I do now revolves around Jquery, Javascript, PHP, and the like. So I could probably remove VB temporarily or maybe permanently. I will look at Revo Free and report back. Thanks for your insights.

I agree, the link between Cabinet Maker and the Internet Trouble Shooter is really curious.

So I installed and ran Revo Free and uninstalled VB. Rebooted and tried internet troubleshooter again. Unfortunately, the Cabinet Maker error appeared almost immediately. I will continue to look for a solution and if I find one I will post it.

Did you re-install VB?

Open an elevated command prompt. try the sfc/scannow and let it run. Report back any messages positive or negative.

I did not yet reinstall VB as I no longer really use it. I also left IE-11 disabled. Ran the sfc/scannow as you suggested. It reported "no integrity violations." Below is the CBS log for the scan. I see some warnings and failures. But no repairs were done. Will be very curious about your opinion.

This one, for instance, was repaired using the system store. Although I have no training or experience in reading the CBS log, I have found that users downgraded from IE11 to IE9 as a workaround.
Are you still experiencing your original issue?

Yes, as before when I use the Internet Connection Troubleshooter I get the "Microsoft Cabinet Maker has stopped working" message. Does this rise to a level that I should post the problem on Windows Update Forum?

I appreciate that you have taken the time to look at this issue as you have. Thanks.

If you want to continue exploring the CBS log issues then yes.

You are most welcome.

If you do choose to move to the Windows Update section, please refer to this post so they can see what's been done so far.

I am not sure if I will move it at this time, though I probably eventually will. BTW below I have attached a segment from the addition.txt file generated by FRST.EXE that at least identifies the makecab.exe errors that are occurring along with the faulting ntdll.dll module. Wonder if just replacing the .dll might be beneficial?

IMO-----The SFC/SCANNOW should have replaced the file if it was corrupt. It is a Windows OS file (dynamic link library) and probably isn't "replaceable" without a re-install of the OS.

Some of our programmers can better explain the relationship between DLL's and EXE's.

There is simply not that much legitimate info about makecab.exe. I found some more here.

Does the error happen only when your internet drops or all the time?

Thanks to xrobwx71 and plodr for your responses. Each of you provided something which I think contributed to what appears at this time to be a solution. That is, the Cabinet Maker error has mostly disappeared (just 3 times in the past 3 days). Of course, nothing in what has happened is explained, is associative only, and not causative, leaving me still scratching my head.

xrobwx71 your last post contained links, which led me to a post about testing for a corrupt user account. First, used the elevated command: net user administrator /active:yes Then switched the user to Administrator and tested for the error. The Cabinet Maker error did not exist under the administrator account, which made me realize it might not be a faulty driver. Second, while it wasn't the same problem, xrobwx71's links also led me to this: https://www.computerworld.com/article/3112358/windows-7-log-file-compression-bug-can-fill-up-your-hard-drive.html, which didn't solve anything but provided an insight into how the Cabinet Maker was working to generate log files. Here I noted that every time I did the internet troubleshooter a log file was generated in windows/logs/. So I cleaned out the cab_xxx files in CBS and deleted all old log files. The frequency of the Cabinet Maker errors was diminished but not eliminated.

Then plodr provided the ntdll.dll error link, option #6, which suggested disabling Data Execution Prevention (DEP) for Explorer.exe. Interestingly, I tried this but received an error message that DEP couldn't be disabled for 64 Bit Explorer.exe. However, the selection box for programs to disable in DEP self-populated with two specialty programs I use, so I let it disable them. Saved and restarted the OS and suddenly I am now only getting the Cabinet Maker issues rarely.

As I have said, I do not completely or clearly understand why any of this would have made a difference. But so far it has. So kudos to xrobwx71 and plodr.(y)
