How to find a WSUS server from a client machine.

There may be a time when you are working at a site where you did not set up the original network, perhaps you are a contractor or the previous person who looked after this field has left. Alternatively, it could be a case that you are on site fixing a machine and need to remember the name of your WSUS server. Regardless of your reasons it is actually pretty simple to locate the WSUS server when on a client machine. These are two methods that can be used.

Using the Resultant Set of Policy Microsoft Management Console Snap In (rsop.msc)

Click on the Start button -> Inside the search box type in rsop.msc-> Right click and select Run as administrator.

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update.

Right click on Specify intranet Microsoft update service location. Look inside the two fields this will list the WSUS server and the port.

Using the Registry Editor (regedit.exe)

Click on the Start button -> Inside the search box type in regedit-> Click on regedit.exe.

Navigate to the following key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\

The WSUS server can be found next to WUServer.
