Firefox is not just a web browser now. The most recent version of web browser, Firefox 17 comes with new Social API for the social networks like Facebook, Twitter and so forth.

The Social API provides out-of-box features like a social sidebar, toolbar notification buttons and the ability to easily chat with your friends without you needing to visit social websites.

In addition, a preview of the first social integration with Facebook Messenger for Firefox has been introduced and it is turned off by default.

To enable, Facebook Messenger for Firefox, follow the steps listed below:

I heard about this... What a piece of junk. They should've kept it as an addon instead of a default embedded feature as far as I'm concerned. I hate bulking things up for no reason. I'll never use that Facebook thing if I upgrade to v17... Just a waste of HDD space for me because of this firefox feature. All it will do is make the installation overall size, larger.

I regret making it active. It always gets in the way, and half the time I don't even notice my messages or notifications through it. Like you said an absolute waste of time and space.

Facebook by itself is a distraction in my opinion. People nowadays spend more time there than they do in the 'reality world'. Most of the people I see at work on a day to day basis always seem to be on their phones (because of having no easy access to a computer, it's convenient,) and 80% of the time it's because they are busy with Twitter or Facebook for the most part. I definitely don't need it to be my distraction when i'm browsing the web.

It's great for marketing, but that doesn't mean it's not, as well, a big timewaster. Society trends, and followers of those trends, set the way we live our day to day lives when you think about it. Pretty scary, because some things become routine for us humans whether it makes sense or not sometimes because of that. If you're not in that game, you're an outsider.

I just choose to be one when I decide not to waste hours of my life on a social media site.

"Americans spent 53.5 billion minutes on Facebook in May 2011"

(Multiply that by 12, and then realize that this is only a portion of the worlds population that uses Facebook, furthermore, realize that Facebook has grown even larger since May 2011, and these numbers will now be relatively smaller to today's statistics...)

That's the reason why I hate it... I will admittedly say that i'd use facebook for advertising, but nothing more. I feel sorry for everyone that has wasted as much time as I know some people spend on that site.

If you look at the facts here, we've bombarded ourselves with so many of these distractions, that there almost isn't enough time in a single day to ever have time for yourself. You're checking your phone for text messages, emails, facebook, twitter, etc... Then there's gaming, TV, and all this other stuff, on top of our regular priorities like having to pay the bills, and going to work to even afford to pay your bills, eating, sleeping (at which time you can't get anything productive done), etc...

We keep going this way, it's a sad future. Technology is great, but it's supposed to make things easier for us. As far as i'm concerned, some implementation of the way we use technology has only caused us a loss of time that we can't ever get back. Computers are great!!! Amazing inventions, but what do we use them for? lol. Again, facebook, twitter... We don't utilize their true potential half the time, nor do most people even understand what they are capable of doing.

Sorry for my ranting. I'm very opinionated about a few things in life :)

Cheers,
Ace

I use the site but for the important stuff. Like recent purchases or updates to my employment or life. I use it for what it was designed for. Not for bragging rights or who's the biggest baddest wolf.

Basically I use fb for business and personal business but keep the drama out.

Actually facebook was designed to be a personal social media site, but because it has grown to it's current size, it became an asset to the world of marketing. And that's the point at which it grown even more. For business related stuff, I use LinkedIn. :)
