I'm trying to specifically set up my network so that I can connect my old XP machine and my Win 7 machine.

I tried using the instructions here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/ but it simply did not work.

I've connected both computers via Ethernet to each other, still didn't work. So now I've got them hooked up to my Gateway 2Wire Modem-Wireless Router combo. I simply can not get these two machines to recognise each other on the network and I really want to get them to talk so I can start transferring my data.

Edit: I dont have a printer to share - don't bother with that stuff please.

May as well start at the beginning.
Check and confirm that both computers are members of the same WORKGROUP and that no name (NetBIOS) conflicts exist.
enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP in the properties of IPv4, under the WINS tab, within the properties of your network interface card.
type
services.msc
into the search box and hit enter
confirm that the following services are started, consider setting the startup type to automatic
Computer Browser
Function Discovery Provider Host
Function Discovery Resource Publication
Network Connections
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness
Network Store Interface Service
Server
SSDP Discovery
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Workstation (Some of these may only be available on the Win7 machine
Ping one from the other by IP address and then by NetBIOS name and see what happens.

Hi cayden.

Ensure all user accounts on xp machine and windows 7 machine have same username and password.

Ensure UPNP is enabled on your router so your devices are visible to each other on the network but remove any checkmark against WAN ping respond.

Please post the results of pings between the two machines as well please.

User accounts as in what you log into Windows with?

Checked all services are running. Enabled NetBIOS over TCPIP. Pinged, 0% loss but "destination host unreachable". Will check UPNP now though.

In some instances you may find it necessary to actually create a share and share something on both computers.
Additionally examine any third party firewalls (comodo or zone alarm) and or any third party security suites that may be running on either or both computers and make sure that the appropriate trusts are established for both / all network nodes involved.

I see this. I'm not sure what it means by it not being on, but I also don't see an option for UPNP like you mentioned.

I can not find the options they mention on that page. I have buttons that say 'Access Files' but they do literally nothing.

Hi Cayden,

In addition....please post the ipconfig/all (attach the .txt file) of all the computers that you wish to network with, we'll see if everything looks good or not.

You may also try accessing the shared network folder in 2 different ways, better to try them both.
Click on Start and type \\IPAddress\SharedDrive or Shared Folder (you may substitute the IPAddress with the Computer or Hosts Name) then press enter. Were you able to access the shared folder or drive?

I hope that we're not consufing you, please let us know. :grin1:

Actually, I really do apologise, I think this was an issue of speaking too soon. I got the network going, it turns out I needed to set the XP machine's TCPIP settings to NETBIOS move and to allow file sharing.

I'm really sorry to have wasted y'all's time, I thought I had tried everything. Times like these I wish I had a NAS Box.

Thanks again for the help, I did learn a thing or two at the very least.

No worries Cayden and no need to apologize, things can be overlooked easily and unpurpose.
Yes, a NAS is great to have and hassle free setup as well. Cloud storage is also another alternatative and a reduntancy backup for you to consider, you may access your shared filed remotely anywhere and anytime. One of my computers (laptop) crashed yesterday luckily I have all my files stored in my Skydrive so I didn't worry about it. :smile9:

I've considered SkyDrive and other Cloud / Internet services. However, I wish to keep my information mine, if people want my data, they're gonna have to go into my home. I often equip all of my computers with as many HDDs as the Mobo can handle. My old PC had four, this one has six. This is the first time I've needed to transfer files too, and I do keep regular backups on my external HDD. Smaller transfers are done via USB. I try to keep everything offline, this way. I even tend to have two drives with Windows installed, incase I need an immediate boot disk.

No worries we are here to help and you are welcome.

Good strategy with the backups also in case of disaster.

Can i please ask you to mark the thread as solved please using thread tools at the top thank you.
