Windows 10 is finally here and I am sure most of you are excited to receive your free upgrade. We have noticed a common trend with some certain error messages or problems that we are sharing some information about. Please note, not all error messages have been fully investigated by our Windows Update Team. If there is no fix posted below please start a new thread in the Windows Update forum and one of us will be along to troubleshoot your issue.
Update/Installing error messages
0x80240020
The following error code x80240020 refers to "ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION", which translates to the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. In order to fix this error message please follow the steps below:
Wait a few minutes, once windows has advised all updates have installed you should hopefully have a message saying "Your upgrade to Windows 10 is ready".
If the above doesn't work follow the below steps:
0x80070005
This error message can have a few different causes, this error code is a "Access Denied" error code. The fix for this one can vary from computer to computer, due to the nature of this error message we will ask for you to create a new thread in the windows update forum. Click Here to start a new thread in our Windows update forum.
Within your new thread please provide us with the following information:
Download and run SFC /SCANNOW on Windows 7
Download and run SFC /SCANNOW on Windows 8
0x80073712
The above error message is one we have been fixing for years, this error message is one that that has a few different causes. Due to the nature of this error message we will ask for you to create a new thread in the windows update forum, click Here to start a new thread in our Windows update forum. Inside your new thread please follow the below instructions:
If you are running Windows 7:
Please follow the instructions Here to run the System Update Readiness Tool. When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your newly created Windows Update forum:
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log
If you are running Windows 8:
"Something happened" error message
This is another error message that has been seen at different stages of the installation process. The fix for this one can vary from computer to computer. Windows Validation error messages
0xC004F061
The following error code 0xC004F061 will show up if Windows can not see that a genuine previous version of Windows was installed before upgrading to Windows 10. In order to install Windows 10 and be eligible for the free upgrade you will have to install Windows 7 or Windows 8, then upgrade to Windows 10.
0xC004C020
The following error 0xC004C020 will appear if you are trying to upgrade a computer that is running a Volume License product key (KMS or MAK), if you are getting this error message but don't think that you are running a KMS or MAK license please create a new thread in the windows update forum. 0xC004F034

- Please open up a command prompt Window as a administrator, instructions for Windows 7 or Windows 8 and 8.1.
- Inside the command prompt window enter in the following commands:
net stop wuauserv
ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download DL.bak
ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DS.bak
net start wuauserv
wuaucault /updatenow
Wait a few minutes, once windows has advised all updates have installed you should hopefully have a message saying "Your upgrade to Windows 10 is ready".
If the above doesn't work follow the below steps:
- Open up a new Notepad file (Press the Windows Key button on your keyboard and the R button -> Type in Notepad -> Press Ok)
- Enter in the following text into the notepad file:
Code:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade] "New Value #1"=dword:00000000 "AllowOSUpgrade"=dword:00000001
- Click on File -> Save, name the file win10fix.reg and in the dropdown box for 'Save as type' select All Files (*.*). Save the file on your desktop.
- Go to your desktop and double click on win10fix.reg, press Yes on any prompts.
- Restart your PC and try and upgrade again.
0x80070005
This error message can have a few different causes, this error code is a "Access Denied" error code. - Click on the

- Press Enter
- Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt, please rename this file to CBS_{Insert forum username here}_{insert todays Date here}.txt For example "CBS_Go The Power_1803.txt"
- Please upload CBS_{Username}_{Date}.txt to your newly create thread in the Windows update forum..

- Do you have the Windows 10 app in the system tray? If yes, please click on the icon, are there any error messages?

- Download MGADiag (by Microsoft) from Here
- Run the tool by double-clicking on the file. Press Continue when prompted
- When it has finished, press Copy then Paste (Ctrl+V) this into your newly created
- Please also mention what version of windows is on your COA sticker (if you have one) but don't post the key.

Windows 8:
- Right click on the
- Click on Command prompt =>
- Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command
licensingdiag.exe -report "%userprofile%\Desktop\report.txt" -log "%userprofile%\Desktop\repfiles.cab"
- Once finished please go to your desktop -> You will see two files report.txt and repfiles.cab -> Please select both files and add them into a zip file
- Upload this zip file to your newly created thread in the Windows update forum.
0xC004F034
