Hi, I'd like beg your assistance with an old computer that my mother uses which I've been unable to upgrade. For some time, probably more than two years, I've been trying to make her PC upgrade every time I visit her at a weekend. Over the years I've tried a lot of different things but no avail. I like to think that I know about Windows, I used to support it professionally 20 years ago, but apparently my knowledge is all outdated. Probably I've made it worse rather than better!

Updates never work now, here is a screenshot:

win update fail.png

The last attempt I did was to try the sfcfix tool, but it did not help and indeed I've probably made things worse in my desperation. Previously sfc/scannow would run, but fail before finishing. Now it won't run at all and gives me:

Code:
Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.16299.371]
(c) 2017 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow

Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>

I can no longer try the sfcfix tool either as this also generates an error. Note that it did run several times previously, and I have attached logs that I believe are from those sessions. At this moment I've lost track of what I tried before and probably totally messed it up, for which I apologize.

Code:
C:\>SFCFix
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

C:\>dir SFCFix.exe
 Volume in drive C is Acer
 Volume Serial Number is 446F-6D97

 Directory of C:\

09/20/2020  01:20 PM         2,315,928 SFCFix.exe
               1 File(s)      2,315,928 bytes
               0 Dir(s)  294,717,222,912 bytes free

C:\>

I have attached all the logs that I hope are helpful.

I would appreciate your kind advice on whether this system is recoverable or not.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards,
Raymond

Hi!

Please do the following first:

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

Thank you for your reply. I have done as instructed and it seems the disk has a problem, the extended test only got 10% though before terminating.

The attributes has one pink value:

I have also attached the log file if it is of any value.

I can see on the errors tab that there are plenty of "Uncorrectable error in data" errors.

I guess this answers my question, I suppose the disk is failing and that makes this machine not recoverable.

Thank you for your attention to this, I should have thought to do a disk test myself!

Regards,
Raymond
