Hello and Looking for a FAQ for SFCFix

Hello,

I seem to have the reverse Midas touch lately with three or four Win7 and Win10 machines.
They won't boot, and I've been going in circles with the various procedures for booting, recovery and command prompt actions.
No success, and very frustrating since I'm basically in the dark.

Was about the try the SFC command when I found this website and application. Hoping for the best.....

But I didn't see an FAQ and my question is simple - If I can't boot up the PC, how do I use the SFCFix program?
Can I scan a non-bootable drive if it's connected to a working machine either by SATA or external USB?

BTW, for what it's worth, I eventually stumbled across this technical write-up on the step-by-step bootup actions happening in the PC.
Will go down this road next since there's finally a map, and not just click-click-click.... or type and wait.... :-)

I was thinking, turning my machine's into gold doesn't sound too bad, until I noticed reverse. 😁

We don't have a public FAQ on SFCFix - mostly because some of the ways of using it can be very damaging to a PC if done incorrectly, and we prefer fixing PCs to breaking them.

If you post in the Windows Update (if that was the cause) or Windows 7/10 sections we can try and assist more.

If you're interested more broadly in Windows Update issues, and like the idea of helping out on forums, we do also have the Windows Update Academy which teaches helpers how to use SFCFix and other tools - can be a big commitment though. :-)

Hello Will,

Thanks for the reply, but I'm a little confused by your answer. I'm just asking for some basic guidance on using the program, i.e. might it be useful for me?, and how to proceed?

The troubles I've had recently are all over the board -

One was after a Win10 update,

Another was Win7 boots-one-evening but not the next day (could be a flakey hard drive here),

One Win7/Win10 machine suddenly started to say "Not Genuine" after years of use, and now will not boot boot to either of it's Win7 or 10 installs,

Last was a desktop where I simply installed an additional drive and directed Bios / Uefi to boot from it for temporary check/use, and it corrupted the original drive's boot capabilities.

So, just looking for a way thru the wilderness.

BTW - I'm shocked that I was able to snag my screen name! I won't squat on it if anyone really wants it... ;-)

As Will mentioned, the reason why there is a public tutorial on how to use the tool, because applying the wrong fix script can be detrimental.
