Hi. My name is Alan and I am a high school math teacher. While I took programming a loooong while back (yes, we used punch cards), and still dabble in minor ways, I do not understand an operating system and I am stumped. I am very grateful to those who post here with answers to problems, and, to be honest, I joined precisely to ask a question (feel free to check my post in the Windows Update section: "Win Update keeps requiring reboot..."). Thanks again for providing this amazing resource.

I came in at the tail end of punch cards in the late 80s and remember them well, but not fondly!
