Greetings. I'm having an issue upgrading my HP Pavilion dv7 laptop to Win10. I've tried several different iterations and multiple suggested fixes, but have not been able to get past the "Modern Setup Host has stopped working" error.

I initially ran the upgrade from the Get Windows 10 icon in my systray. After that errored out, I then did some digging and followed the steps in this link - http://www.thewindowsclub.com/modern-setup-host-has-stopped-working-windows. However, that didn't work.

I have the Windows 10 install source on a bootable USB drive. I'm uploading the SFCFix.txt and will follow with the CBS.zip (~99MB).

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Unfortunately I've never been able to solve that particular error. A couple questions.

1. Do you have your Windows 7 with SP1 media?
2. Did Windows 7 come pre-installed on your machine (OEM copy) or did you purchase a Windows 7 copy from a store (Retail copy)?

Thanks.

Hey Brian. No, I don't have Windows 7 with SP1 media. It's a pre-installed OEM copy (from HP). The Windows license in on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop. I do have all the updates (including SP1) installed.

Thanks. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Retrieve System Information
1. Download Speccy to your desktop. The setup file will be named spsetup126.exe or something similar.
2. Double-click on this file and install it. Note: Please ensure that you uncheck any foistware that may be presented during the install (i.e. Chrome Browser install).
3. When the program opens it will retrieve some information regarding your system.
4. Once it's done, select the File menu and choose Publish snapshot. Answer Yes to the confirmation message.
5. On the next screen that comes up, choose the Copy to Clipboard button and paste this link in your next reply.

OK. If you have already tried the following please let me know. This gives you the best chance of success.

1. Ensure anything non-essential is unplugged from your computer (i.e. printers, wireless mice/keyboard, scanners, USB devices).
2. Perform a Clean Boot of your machine following the instructions below.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

3. Once in a Clean Boot state, download the Media Creation Tool and follow the instructions in the "Upgrade to Windows 10 Using the Tool" section.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Let me know how it goes.

Ok, will do. I may not have the results until tomorrow. Having to use my laptop to get some work done. I appreciate your help with this.

Hey Brian, I followed the links and directions you provided. No luck. Same message "Modern Setup Host...."

Unfortunately there are only a few options here.

1. Complete wipe and load of your system. So you would have to back up all your data, reinstall the OS, copy data back and re-install all of your programs.
2. Obtain Windows 7 with SP1 media from a friend or family member or buy replacement media from the OEM HP. They will sometimes just have you pay shipping for the replacement media. There is no gurantee that this will work but doing a repiar install of Windows 7 has a good chance of working.
3. Move all of your data to an external drive and then delete it off your main drive to free up space. Then have you do a physical to virtual conversion of your machine and send that to me via FTP. I can analyze the image more intrusively than I can with the live system to try and determine the issue and hopefully provide you information on how to get around this.
