HP Spectre Touchsmart throws this code on boot and hangs. I enabled Legacy support and booted to Linux and can copy files to a fat32 partition. I put the drive in another Windows machine, on boot, post states hard drive is incompatible. If the drive has gone bad, why can I copy off it in Linux? This is a Win 8.1 machine. Is the (3fo) code a failing hard drive or motherboard? Thanks!

Being able to boot from a drive and copy files from a drive are two different things completely. While this does suggest the drive is failing or the boot sector or partition tables are corrupt, in reading about this HP specific 3F0 error it could also be a motherboard chipset failure. I recommend you copy off any data you do not want to lose. Then run the diagnostics as suggested by kamatr here.

Thanks Digerati. It was a HP laptop with an Intel Motherboard. It was configured with "Intel Rapid Storage Technology", on bootup, I accessed the IRST menu with "control I", and reset the disk to "non raid", then I could access the data by connecting the hard drive to another computer. I reinstalled Win 8.1 and hard drive utilities showed the hard drive firmware as a "Good" hard drive with no errors. Apparently IRST benefits single hard drives. Anyway something must have gotten corrupted. IRST details: Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology Product Overview
