Hi all,

Earlier today I attempted to update my Nvidia GPU drivers. It failed, which prompted me to do a clean install (that uninstalled the existing driver), which also failed.

When I attempted to use Device Manager to update the device (now shown as "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)", it says that "Windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install them", followed by "The configuration registry database is corrupt".

I am on Windows 10 Pro Version 1909. I also attempted "Reset this PC", which failed as well. (The error simply said "There was a problem resetting your PC".)

I attempted to use SFCFix, but it simply said "No corruptions were detected".

Attached is the CBS file produced as per the instructions, and thanks for your help.

I also attempted to use the Media Creation Tool to update my laptop. It also gave a vague "failed to update" message.

Bumping as I can't seem to do anything to the driver or updates and want to try something before a complete system reinstall.

Hi!

Step 1 - Replace Drivers Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download DRIVERS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the DRIVERS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current DRIVERS file and select rename. Rename it to DRIVERS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Drivers folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Reboot and retry updating the driver.

Hi softwaremaniac.

While I did not see your reply and attempted a clean install with a USB stick, the issue no longer persists after the reinstall. Thank you for your input regardless.
