Adblock Plus whitelisting particular ads

Millions of Internet users rely on Adblock Plus daily to keep their web experience a relatively clean one. While it's a taboo practice with some companies that depend on the income raised by advertisements, it's an invaluable tool that cuts down on much of the "fat" that crops up during normal browsing.

Unfortunately, a few ads to tend to display here and there, whether it's relegated to a Wikipedia plea or an interstitial that forces you to view an ad before being given a link to access your original destination. Intriguingly enough, it appears that Google has a hand in keeping this practice afloat.

It can be disabled: How to disable ‘Acceptable Ads’ whitelist in Adblock Plus [Guide]

Of course, they use Firefox and give instructions for Firefox. It's a little bit different for Google Chrome.

if you are using Chrome, you actually have to go into the Tools, Extensions, and under AdBlock Plus, next to 'Allow in incognito', there is a link for Options. Clicked that and the first tab is the main filter list tab.

Here's the link to more information on 'acceptable ads'.

Bear in mind that virtually all large websites rely on adverts to exist. I thought the mention of Wikipedia plea's as adverts was particularly distasteful - one of the worlds largest websites which is essentially non-profit making and does not display adverts anywhere on its site. A plea for donations is far from being the same thing.

The beauty of Adblock Plus is that even if you disable those specific ads, you can disable Adblock Plus on a site by site basis. I do.

I agree about Wikipedia's very infrequent calls for help. I usually do try to help when I can. Of course, Wikipedia's requests for help are not adverts. Adverts are basically third party stuff that people make money off of and Wikipedia does requests for help instead of that. Sheesh...

You are so right Will.
