Hi

So I have this laptop that fell down, I replaced its screen, now when I am inside windows the boot time has increased and the wait time as well.
The hard drive utilization is always 99%. It also makes some ticking sounds. So, I concluded a new hard drive is needed.
First I want to make sure if I am taking the right decision. If I am , then can I avoid installing windows and just clone the old windows to the new hard drive.

-Thanks for your help

The ticking sound is a common symptom of pending hard drive failure. That means the R/W head is banging against the end-stops while seeking data.

But the 99% utilization is not a symptom of drive failure. Have you run error checking or chkdsk /r on it? Scanned for malware?

That said, before doing anything, you should copy off any important files you don't want to lose.

Cloning will work - if the drive does not fail before or during the cloning. But note any corruption or malware will be cloned to the new drive too.

The hard drive was working fine before this happens. I have not done HD cloning before, can someone provide a way to do that.

Will cloning the hard drive avoid installing windows on the new hard drive.

I saved some time by installing windows 10 on the new hard drive and fortunately win10 was activated automatically.
