File Explorer hangs when I right click on any file. This happened recently after a few program installations and malware scans. It does not happen in a browser window or other app like Wordpad. Do the three possible fixes I found look worth a try?

1) clean boot - msconfig to open Sytem Configuration and stop all services and start up process. Then reboot. Is this OK to do, will this cause a system problem??

2) System File to fix the corrupted system file - use sfc /scannow with Restore Disk.

3) Repair Drive - use chkdsk

TIA

I am not sure if this is related, but the system is also getting the error - failed to connect to windows service.

Not yet, but this was next on my list. Thanks. I did download the app and open it, but did not go through the shell extension procedure yet. The reason is the right click hang problem has stopped for now and I don't know why. I only did a couple of reboots and disk cleanup and defrag, both did not fix the problem. If the problem reoccurs I will try the procedure and post back.

What would be considered an unusual shell extension that I should look for?

Anything that isn't Microsoft ;)

If you include the list with your reply I can help you out with that part.

This right click continues to be a problem that comes and goes. I did disable all non-microsoft extensions, and there was no change- still hangs. I did not reboot when I did this, but sometimes rebooting will fix the problem temporarily. The above link did not work, so I could not get the instructions. Should I reboot and try the extension method again?
