Failure to Update Windows 8.1

I have Windows 8.1 running on my desktop machine. I would like to install Win10, but for some time I get errors in trying to apply updates to 8.1. Now I try to manually apply, but without success. Specifically, the following updates will not load without error: KB29611908 “without KB2919355” and Kb2919355. Attempting to load these 2 updates produce Error code 800F0922.

I ran “sfc/scannow” from the command prompt and received a message that corrupt files exist that sfc cannot fix. The files are loaded into file (CBS.log). This is a large file. The most common error identified in the file is that certain directories and files identified are not “owned” or have “duplicate ownership”. The following are 2 lines that are representative of many other lines in the log file which may refer to other files with the problem:

“2015-08-11 22:13:51, Info CSI 00000072 Ignoring duplicate ownership for directory [l:56{28}]"\??\C:\windows\Inf\BITS\0409" in component Microsoft-Windows-Bits-Perf.Resources, Version = 6.3.9600.16384, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture = [l:10{5}]"en-US", VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral

“2015-08-11 22:13:51, Info CSI 00000073 [DIRSD OWNER WARNING] Directory [ml:520{260},l:46{23}]"\??\C:\windows\Inf\BITS" is not owned but specifies SDDL in component Microsoft-Windows-Bits-Perf, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral”

Other than some of the files are corrupt, I do not understand the descriptive lines in the log files. If someone could help me straighten this out, I would really appreciate it. I uploaded the CBS file as text.

Should I be concerned about installing Win 10 before all the security updates have been installed?

That would be the case if Media Creation Tool did install if Win 8.1 is not updated. What do you think?

Windows 10 is an upgrade and completely replaces your existing Windows 8 installation, so no updates to Windows 8 or 8.1 will be required if the Windows 10 upgrade installs successfully :)

One more (probably) dumb question. Will this affect any data or program files currently installed under Win8.1?

Since it is an upgrade installation, all of your personal files and most of your existing programs and apps will be kept when Windows 10 is installed.
The installer should produce a compatibility report and warn you if anything isn't compatible before the upgrade.

As always, it's a good idea to back up anything that is important to you on the computer before making major changes.
