Hi there,

As the title mentions, I have trouble updating my Vista SP1 to SP2. I just recently discovered my Vista laptop wasn't up to date, as it was having problems with finding Windows updates.
I have searched the Microsoft websites for solutions for the last weeks, but none of them worked for me. In the meanwhile I have used various tools like the System Update Readiness Tool, Microsoft Fix It, the sfc /scannow and last but not least the SFCFix.

I could still try to re-install my complete Windows, but I would rather not do so. One of the reasons is that I really want to (kind of) understand what the problems are, so I would know what to in the future. I'm not that deep into software, so I hope all the information I post is useful.

The information I have:

  1. The laptop is a HP Elitebook 8530w, running Windows Vista Business 32-bit, currently running Service Pack 1.
  2. Windows Update only recognizes the new SP2-update (KB948465) if I use the check for updates-button multiple times.
  3. Windows Update won't install the SP2-update and will give the error-code: 0x800f081f. (Update will start downloading, but will stop after approx. 5 mins, only one time it got up to 25% downloading the update.)
  4. Manual installation of SP2 (KB948465) will fail: A system error prevented the service pack from installing.
  5. The System Update Readiness Tool from Windows will try to install Hotfix for Windows (KB947821), but will fail. View attachment CheckSUR.log
  6. The Microsoft Fix It Tool will notice some problems and will give the following Report:

  7. sfc /scannow will give the log as in the attachmentView attachment sfcdetails.txt (formatted as said on this Microsoft-site)
I (the newbie) see three different items that are corrupt in this logs: autochk.exe, license.rtf and logon.scr.
  8. SFCFix will give the following log View attachment SFCFix.txt

  9. I have tried to run all programs and Windows update packages in different orders, with and without restarting in between and also in safe mode, there were no notable differences. Only one remarkable thing: in safe mode the SP2 manual installation gave an error about not supported languages, but I downloaded the SP2 for all languages to circumvent that and that gave me the same error as before.

I would really like to know how I can fix this, but also how such corrupt come to be and what the real problem is here, are all these things related or not?

Thanks for any help in advance, I'm sorry for any language-errors in my post as I'm not a native speaker.

-edit: I also want to note that I have not noticed any problems downloading other updates.

I have to note the following: Last night the SURT (KB947821) made it through and was succesfully installed. After restarting the computer, the SP2-update (89,1 MB) downloaded up to 25% again, but then stopped and failed again, with the same error code: 0x800f081f.

Hello and welcome :)

Please zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

If the file is too large to attach (8MB), upload it to a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.

Looks like the log was archived.

Run this script to automatically collect and upload it:

P.S. That looks like a completely different CBS log, or isn't it?

interesting.

Let's try this:

Copy the MSU file that you downloaded for KB2378111 to a convenient location, such as C:\Temp\

If you choose to use another location, be sure to update the paths accordingly in the example below.

So, today I booted my computer and after installing some other update, Windows Update comes up with the SP2 update it self (without me having to check for updates, as I did before). With little hope in my heart I just tried to download and install it. It all went smooth, to my surprise, so now SP2 is installed and everything looks fine.

Can you tell me if everything should be fixed now? And also I'm kinda curious what you changed or was it just cleaning up some log files for Windows Update?

I want to thank you very much for the quick help anyhow.

Excellent, glad to hear SP2 worked! :)

The reinstallation of KB2378111 was the solution, I only wanted the logs to make sure that it was successful.

Everything should be good, but if you'd like you could run SFC /scannow and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log then I can review it to verify.

I'll mark the thread solved. If you encounter any problems, please post back and I will continue to assist you.

Thanks very much, everything seems to be working fine now. All other new updates are installed smoothly now.

I am still wondering how such corruptions can occur. Can they just happen, because of the complex structure or did some program mess it up?

You should be able to find the new CBS-log here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByBFbcLvCKYQUW1XWlo5VGJ3WlU/view?usp=sharing
First part is about some updates that were installed, if I'm right.

Looks like there is one file that needs replacing.

You got it; because Windows Update is complex there are many things that can cause problems when installing or removing updates. Most often corrupt or missing files or registry entries can be attributed to hardware, software, or environmental issues such as bad ram, bad sectors on the hard disk, loss of power during update installation, or failing to resume from sleep/hibernation after an update.

There were other software problems with Windows Update in Windows Vista as well with no obvious cause, but this was improved after SP2.
