Hello.. I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
By running Windows Update and letting it install two important updates and restarting then I get a couple of errors which I think belongs to KB4516065 and KB4535102(which is a security rollup for .Net Framework)
.. Im going to focus on update KB4516065 because I think It is the big and main one.
So I downloaded and installed this update from the Catalog and it takes quiet a long time to install and around half way through it quits and simply tells me "failed to install"..
I researched this issue and downloaded updates KB4487345 and KB4490628 which also fail to install.
I also learned that I had to have update KB4474419 installed which I DO BUT there are two versions in the Catalog.. and it doesnt let me install the other one..
This forum tells me to download and install the Update Readiness Tool which is 903mb in the Catalog but that is way too big for me because my internet is limited quota, and Ive read that it fails to do anything most of the time..

This is my sfc /scannow results: (please see "CBS (Scannow)"

I also did the following mentioned in another post -

Hi!

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and type in cmd.
2.After you find the Command Prompt, right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
3. Copy and paste the following into the Command Prompt:

reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\COMPONENTS

4. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
5. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
6. Copy and paste 7601.24519 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
7. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.

The result is ABSOLUTLY NOTHING.. nothing came up in the results text file ..

I dont know what to do now and I need an expert's help..

(I am currently running SFCFix .. will update after 15 minutes)

Thank You

Hi!

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Ok, After I followed the instructions in step one, and tried Scannow, It told me I require reboot so I did..
After the scan - "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

"cbs.txt" is too large to upload here, do you want me to upload it elsewhere?

[Edit] Here is the contents of SFCFix.txt :

Sorry.. The update failed to install.. now the cbs.txt created on my desktop is 162 MB and when I open it in notepad its not responding.. Do you want that file?
or do you want the CBS.log which is in the "logs\cbs directory?

Please reboot, then do the following:

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.
i3yiUac.png

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.

Ok, I followed the steps while attempting to install update KB4516065..
The outcome is a file that is 3.12 GB
This will take quiet a while to upload using my connection..
Please bear with me.. Its 2:30 am here..

Did you zip it up before uploading to save bandwidth?

SH#T
I totally forgot... well its too late now only 4 hours left it says..
not a big deal.. ill have to pay for more GBs before the end of the month.. whatever..

Can i repair it using a Windows 10 Iso? ..
I used to work on Windows 10 but decided to revert back to 7 after too many issues..
I mean they do have the same basic files..

Good news.. mostly..

I was able to install the updates mentioned earlier after I followed Kissko's solution here (KB4516065 after restart), (KB4487345 , KB4490628 , KB947821-v34, KB3102810 before restart):
Windows 7 update fails with code 80070308

But I wonder should I restore the "pendingrequired" key ? because now looking in the registry the whole "HKLM\Components " sub-directory is gone..

Now on the other hand update KB4534310 failed with error code: 80242016

If I ever find a solution (searching at the moment did not help), will post here, but im not too keen unless I experience issues.. it seems now that my pc is more stable than ever..

If you navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config, is the COMPONENTS file there? Just tell me if it is present. Do not do anything with it.

Also, retry the update and attach CBS.log if it fails.
