Hi guys,

I hope you can help me with this strange issue with my Server 2016.

I am having issues with updating it, I cant run Windows updates such as cumulative update (the removal tool is still possible to update). I tried to do manual standalone of cumulative updates and even that one fails. I am draging this issue for quite a while and my work around was to do standalone delta update (that one would install) but now I forgot at which last udpate I isntalled and also got bored from not being able to install cumulative updates regulary through the settings window or manually.

Tried SFC and DISM and no help. If you need some logs just let me know I will provide ASAP.

Only error that I get is: "There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x800705b4)"

Hello and welcome! Apologies for the delay! Do you still require assistance? If so, I'll be with you by Wednesday.

Yes, I still need help.
I will today try again SFC/DISM and windows update to get fresh log hits and afterwards I will put CBS and Windowsupdate logs on my dropbox is that OK?

Yes, that's fine.

I ran DISM, SFC and Updates I will give you approximate timestamps below so you may easier get around logs.

DISM was started 17:08-finished around 18h -returned error 800f081f could not find source, the command was
DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
SFC was started after DISM finished and finished around 18:30 (not sure) again gave error that some errors could not be fixed.
Finally I ran the WU at 19:00 and was trying to isntall latest cumulative update and finished in 19:42 with error mentioned before up in the thread.

Here is the link to download: CBS,DISM and Windowsupdate logs: Dropbox - Logs.7z

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service and just provide the link here.

Tried to copy it after restart but still I get message that is open in System, any way around this? Some other way to read data from this file?

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

So I run the script as instructed and below is the output:
Afterwards I ran DISM which completed without error so I decided to run SFC after DISM and SFC said that found corruptions that could not be fixed so I am attaching you DISM and CBS logs: Dropbox - Logs.7z

Hi and thnx on fast reply,

This month I got Windows removal tool (which installed just fine) and 2018-07 Cumulative Update KB4338822. I did not update this server 3-4 months as I had this issue before and workaround was to download and install delta update from Microsoft as cumulatives would always fail. This is I forgot which last delta update I managed to install (I thin was march or february) so I really need now to fix this update issue to install updates regularly.

I did not explain very well. I can only install these Windows removal tools but cumulatives never they always fail I cant install cumulative updates only deta updates that you download manually.
This is the Cumulative update listed in windows updates that is needed:
2018-07 Cumulative Update KB4338822
