I am new to the forum, so forgive me for the errors I am sure to commit.

This is an old installation of Win 7 and has survived bare metal transfers using Acronis. It seems to have been functioning reasonably well until it recently stopped being able to update. Troubleshooters all stop and can't continue. SFC \scannow doesn't run. Many other procedures tried to no avail. Finally tried to do a repair install from my most recent disk. I have done this in the past, but now I get a message saying I can't upgrade to an upgrade. Tried to do a repair install from the ISO files provided online, but the DVD doesn't boot, so this doesn't work either.
I was planning to upgrade to Win 8, but fear my system has so many corrupted files that this may not work either, but the Microsoft upgrade program says I can. But I also get notices to updates that don't seem to be true.
I've run SFCFix and will attach the results. This is all running on a Supermicro X7DWA with 2 Quadcore Intel Xeon L5410's 2333 MZH and 12 GB memory.

Thank you for any advice about these problems, if possible

If you've been doing disk transfers, the chances are that your HD drivers need to be replaced.
Try this...
This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

(you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post an MGADiag report.

We need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Unsure if the install worked, since I got an error message saying this was no for the version of windows I have installed, So I ran the MCADiag tool. This is the report. However I have the Professional not the Ultimate edition,

I suggest that you check again - MGADiag is never wrong about the edition! It's certainly Ultimate installed here -a Retail version (but I can't tell whether it's a Full retail, or an Upgrade of some kind)

This entry is interesting...
Code:
User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Win32)
 Default Browser: N/A, hr=0x80070002
 Download signed ActiveX controls: Prompt
It indicates that there is no default browser set - and that may be part of your problem.

Have you had a malware infestation? If so, do you remember what kind?

Let's have a look at the Event Logs...
Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

Chrome is my default browser. I had a malware that made the Chrome browser use a particular search engine (whose name I have forgotten). I finally got rid of it using a solution I found on the interet using Malware bytes and another malware remover. I think it involved finding some files and deleting them. It may/may not have involved editing the registry. But that was probably 6 months to a year ago.

I haven't received any posts for some time about my problems. I note that someone has marked this as solved, but it has been.Do I need to open another thread?
Thanks

Sorry about that - pressure of work on my part - but I never marked it as solved (I'm not a Moderator here)

I'm posting from work now - but I've put the thread back on my 'todo' list and I'll get back to you when I can.

I think you'd probably better try uninstalling Chrome for the moment - assuming IE also works?
Once it's uninstalled, set IE as the Default Browser, then reboot and post another MGADiag - I'd like to see if this has any effect on the output.

Then reinstall Chrome, and reset that to default - then post another MGADiag

I don't recall seeing any other instances of this error in an MGADiag in the 10000 or so threads I've dealt with.

Noel,

My father's family is from Wales, but I have been unable to trace them on Ancestry.com.

I uninstalled Chrome completely, using Revo Uninstaller Pro. Made IE my default browser as part of the uninstallation (Was this a mistake?) Rebooted, ran MGADiag.

Interesting - the error is still present in the post-uninstall report, but reinstalling Chrome has fixed it.

User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Win32)
Default Browser: C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

Anyhow - back to your original problem...
Please attempt another SFC /SCANNOW - then copy the entire C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your desktop, and compress/zip it. either upload the zip file to you reply, or if it's too big, upload it to a fileshare service (preferably OneDrive or DropBox) and post a link.

As I reported in my initial help for help: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation", i.e this does not work

I am aware of that - but it should leave error messages in the CBS.log file which will give us a pointer as to what is going wrong.

Noel,
The log is an empty file when SFC /SCANNOW DOES NOT RUN.(See my initial post) I believe that another forum member has an alternative program for this situation. It increasingly appears that I may have to do a repair install or update to Win 8 since you don't have another suggestion except to advise me to a procedure that I initially indicated was not working.
Regards,
John

Please post whatever is present in the CBS folder - I have never heard of an empty CBS.log, since it's checked at every boot (as well as the start of an SFC scan) and immediately populated with messages at that time if it's necessary to archive material.
Usually, the only reason for the lack of log files is that some system cleanup tool is deleting them - usually on boot.

Hmmm - that is unusual.
Please boot to Safe Mode, and try from there.
