I was wondering if someone can help me. I keep getting Error Codes 800B0100 and 80070490 when I attempt to install "Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based System (KB2984972)" and "Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based System (KB2984976). I am able to install other updates (just installed "Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.187.1656.0)"). I have restarted my computer (a Lenovo x220, about 3 years old, running Windows 7 professional).

I found another thread on this site instructing me to download SURT (link to thread is https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...-code-800b0100-encountered-unknown-error.html), which I did, but when I looked at the log it informed me that it is unable to repair the corrupt file. Is it possible for me to remove the file? If so, how would I locate it? As the other thread instructed if I was unable to fix the error, I have provided the "CheckSur" information below.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as my warranty just ran out and I would like to make sure all the security on my laptop is up to date. Thank you.

Hi LGilbert, and welcome to Sysnative forums!

One of the things aim to do when dealing with a Windows Update thread is to consider the root cause of the problem. Unfortunately, I don't think yours was just bad luck. In actual fact, this type of corruption is typically caused by hardware failure, specifically bad RAM. To know for sure, please follow these instructions to test your RAM: Test RAM With Memtest86+ - Sysnative Forums. Memtest86+ will need to run for at least 8 passes - this will take a few hours so it's best to run it overnight.

Fortunately, RAM is one of the cheaper PC components to replace and it is often possible to return the RAM if it is fairly new. Before I can make a fix, we need to work out if it is or isn't a hardware fault and replace any failed components, otherwise the errors will continue to occur faster than I can fix them.

However, if in the last couple of months you have already found and removed a failed RAM stick, then of course the above doesn't apply :) I know this isn't what you want to hear, but there's no point me lying to you about the issue.

Regards,
Stephen
