A short story of triumph and failure
Replaced laptop motherboard
SSD won't boot
imaged my SSD over to a new drive
What's this \$WINDOWS.~BT crap? go away stop taking my SSD space
Working with new drive, spent time with multiple drive / boot recovery tools, found success with "boot-repair-disk" (boot-repair-disk download | SourceForge.net)
Booted... start menu won't open - ignored, need to make windows activate again.. new BIOS and hardware
MS Support helped me VIA CHAT to re-activate on new hardware. what, what!? (Needed ShowKeyPlus - Free - to pull Win 8.1 key from system)
reboot -- start menu still won't open
sfc /scannow fails 17% validation
Ok maybe try on old HD. Same process ruined partitions. Thanks boot repair disk - I won't hold it against you
Oh that \$WINDOWS.~BT was my windows installer files. Let's put those back.
DSIM -- tried and tried and tried to make it work. Had to convert ESD To WIM file to make it work...
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source
:esd:d:\sources\install.esd:1 /limitaccess would NOT work
DSIM SUCCESS
sfc /scannow fails still fails during verification (18%)
two runs of SFC /scannow are in the attached CBS.log - items below from run #1

Any help appreciated.

Hello harr,

To be honest I don`t know why you are doing all of this hard drive image migration.

However there a re few things you can do.

1. Can you please confirm if the SSD hard drives are different as size or brand?
2.Is the replaced motherboard the same as the old one?
3.Will be a problem for you to use Windows 10 reset option (this mean loosing all of the installed software at the moment all of the files will remain on the computer)

Many thanks,
Andy

1. Can you please confirm if the SSD hard drives are different as size or brand?
a. The original hard drive would not boot with the exact replacement motherboard, so I imaged it before beginning possibly destructive work. It's a different brand/size, but that doens't matter and it boots fine now.
2.Is the replaced motherboard the same as the old one?
a. Yes.
3.Will be a problem for you to use Windows 10 reset option (this mean loosing all of the installed software at the moment all of the files will remain on the computer)
a. I prefer not to. I'm using the laptop now. The presenting problem is the start menu won't open. the SFC failure just tells me there's something deeper going on.

My thanks to you.

I understand,

Ok can you please perform a cleanboot .

Also please remove all of the installed drivers in control panel, after rebooting Windows 10 will automatically install drivers for you.

The run sfc/scannow in cmd as administrator.

Many thanks,
Andy

It seems to me that a clean boot would not be as reliable as a safe boot or a recovery environment since they don't load any extraneous software. And I've tried both of those methods multiple times. However, I tried a clean boot also, with the same results I've been seeing. (SFC /SCANNOW fails at 18% verification)

Your comment around "removing all the drivers in control panel" is not completely clear, but safe mode and recovery modes would have avoided all non-required drivers. so I feel like that's covered already.

Thanks for the feedback.

Clean boot cannot be compared with Safemode because under safe boot you also loading many services and startups.

Are you running the sfc/scannow under Windows recovery mode or you are able to load Windows 10 ?

I have tried many different approaches to fix the problem, but unfortunately some system files were corrupted. The easiest fix was a Windows 10 in place upgrade or reset.

You will need to download a 10586.0 which will be tough since they don't exist, and direct DISM to the install.vim, to actually run the command.

That is the reason I`m asking if you are able to Reset the Windows :).

Can you please run chkdsk and System Restore?

Many thanks,
Andy

I've run scannow under recovery, safe and clean mode, as well as normal mode which I'm in now.

I have tried many different approaches to fix the problem, but unfortunately some system files were corrupted. The easiest fix was a Windows 10 in place upgrade or reset.

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say 10586.0 -- ?

That is the reason I`m asking if you are able to Reset the Windows :).

Already run chkdsk many times. I do not seem to have a system restore point.

Thanks!

The 10586.0 is the build of Windows 10.

Unfortunately they upgraded this build and ISO files for the old build are almost impossible to get.

Here you can check the progress of Microsoft with Windows 10.

That is the reason I`m amending "
Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade".

Unfortunately this update will delete the installed software.

I can amend procedure for repairing you Windows image 10586.0 but this will require Windows 10 build 10586.0 ISO file which is outdated and removed from the Microsoft download links.

I hope you will understand :)

In case you rather collect second opinion I`ll leave the topic open.

Many thanks,
Andy

I tried the reset and keep files, which failed, so I tried the reset and remove files, and that failed. I ended up doing a fresh install from scratch.

Only thing I have to say is I'm thankful for crashplan and ninite.

Thanks for the feedback.

Thank you for your feedback.

I happy you mange to sort this out :)

There are bizarre moments from Microsoft when updating service pack and Windows build.

To be honest most of the issues are caused by upgrading from previous version of Windows installed on MBR.

Anyway fresh start is always the best :)
