I've been trying to get my computer to update for some time now, but to no avail.

Whenever I go to update, it gives me error 80070246 and fails. I've tried the solutions poster here

https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...update-nor-working-error-code-80070246-a.html

which don't seem to have worked. SFCFix.exe gives me error 582 which says this:

Error: 582

An illegal character was encountered. For a multi-byte character set this includ
es a lead byte without a succeeding trail byte. For the Unicode character set th
is includes the characters 0xFFFF and 0xFFFE.

I'm running windows 8 and haven't been able to update to 8.1 because of this issue.
Anyone know what's up?

On a possibly related note, I am unable to install Microsoft .Net 4.5.1, which has prevented me from using two applications on the entire internet: Visual Studio (IDE) and League of Legends (game). Everything else (steam games, Unity 3D, open office, Eclipse IDE, etc.) works just fine.

That error is actually from DISM when SFCFix performs a DISM scan. Did SFCFix actually complete?

Export CBS folder

  1. Right click on the
    aa922834-ed43-40f1-8830-d5507badb56c_39.jpg
    button
  2. Click on File Explorer
  3. Double-click on the C: drive, scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  4. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  5. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  6. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  7. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  8. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  9. Attach this to your next post please.
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or One Drive

Basically we have a BitShift (registry corruption) somewhere, unfortunately DISM did not provide a file path.

Lets see if SFCfix can find it:

SFCFix script

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Go to your desktop and right click on the background -> Select New -> Text Document -> Name this file SFCFixScript.txt.
  3. Open up SFCFixScript.txt and copy all of the following text inside the code box below and paste it into SFCFixScript.txt.
    Code:
    BitShift::
  4. Click on File -> Save. Close out of SFCFixScript.txt.

  8. SFCFix will now process the script.
  9. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  10. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Here are the results, it took less than a second to run:

Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products

Navigate to C:\Windows\RegBak\{Date}\ and copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.

Now right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.

Please rename this file to COMPONENTS_{Insert forum username here}_{insert todays Date here}.zip For example "COMPONENTS_Go The Power_1803.Zip"

Then please upload it to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). If you have a Microsoft Account, OneDrive could be a good choice: https://onedrive.live.com/, but any other will do just fine. Make sure to set the file as publicly accessible.

Then send me a link to the file in your new thread (outlined below)

Yes, they are. My previous post contains a link to the components file you asked for. Let me know if there's anything else I can provide.
