Hi. Recently I've gotten the error message " failed to connect to a windows service. group policy content" when I sign in, and Desktop doesn't load. Usually after about 4 restarts it goes away, however Googling has told me this is related to a failed Windows Update. I've tried to manually update but get this error message. Here are the log files and SFCFix results:

Hello and welcome to the forum.

This error is not a fun one, it can be quite hard to try and track down the cause. I have taken a look at the COMPONENTS hive and I can already see an issue inside the HEX data of the file, I tried to do a quick repair to try and get it going, but it failed.

Please give me a few days.

Alex

To add onto that, we're not sure if you need to know the files Update is trying to install, but whenever I try to click on Windows Update now it just freezes and doesn't load. :S

This would be most likely from WU trying to load the COMPONENTS hive. Tomorrow night (+9.30 EST) I will have some free time to investigate this.

Ah that's sad to hear. I'm sure it's really difficult to fix, I don't even know how I came to this problem

We do this a far bit, the corruption can be quite hard to track down.

As to why it happened? that is a good question. This can be a results from hardware failure.

Warning:: This fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Warning:: Before doing anything it is a good idea to back up any data/files that are important to you, in case your hard drive is dying. Please see Here

Please follow the instructions for MemTest86+, for atleast 10 passes. Let me know the results.

What I recommend from here is to run some HDD diagnostics. Please follow the steps here for SeaTools HDD Diagnostics. Run a Long test and a Short test, then report back the results to this thread.

chkdsk /f scan

  1. Right click on the Start button and select Run as administrator
  2. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    chkdsk /f

  3. Reboot
  4. Download ListChkdskResult.exe (by SleepyDude) from Here
  5. Double click on it to run it. It will take a few seconds to scan, then it will open a Notepad window with the log. Copy and paste the contents of this into your next post please!
