Error Code 80070246, Windows updates failling

Okay, so let's try this with the correct format :roll eyes (sarcasti

For the past couple of months, on my Windows 8.0 desktop, I've been having issues applying updates. While a number of them have installed just fine, there is a consistent failure updating KB2802618 and KB2822241, and more recently KB2871690 and KB2871777. All of the following will download, then attempt to install, before quickly failing displaying error code 80070246. For a while, this was not an issue, but recently, the inability to update is preventing me from installing the .NET 4.5.1 framework update, which I need for a project of mine. I've also noticed that the computer takes significantly longer to check for updates than my other windows 8.1 laptop and tablet, usually about half an hour while the other computers take 5 minutes.

So far, I've tried resetting Windows update with Microsoft's tool, but with little success. Any help would be appreciated, and thank you for your time.

Anyone? I'd really appreciate it if I didn't have to go through a whole reinstall.

DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
    button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Now I could fix these errors with no problem, but I suspect the error is a lot more widespread than this considering dism didn't want to run. How old is this computer? These errors are a sign of hardware problems so I would like to do a few diagnostic tests. Due to the potential scale of this problem, and us being unable to properly diagnose all of the problems, I think your best bet is to format and reinstall Windows I'm afraid:

The computer is only two years old, although the video card in it (5770) is a bit older. I've only really had issues with Windows Update, but I'll run a few tests. Are there any that you would suggest?
Bummer that a reinstall might be the fix, I was hoping to avoid a massive backup and refresh. :thud:
