Hi!

First of all, sorry for my bad english, it's not my primary language 😅

When I try to update my Windows I get the error Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712)

I'm trying to install the updates "Cumulative update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5004945)", "Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10, version 20H2 for x64 (KB5003537)" and the 21H1 Update. All three get error.

When I try to manually install the updates (via www.catalog.update.microsoft.com) I get the error "This Update is not Applicable to your Computer".

The Microsoft Defender Antivírus updates install normally, no errors.

The last updates (except for the Microsoft Defender Antivírus updates) are from June 10.

When I run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth I get the error 14098 Component Store has been corrupted

When I run sfc /scannow I get the message Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation (even on Safe Mode).

I've already renamed SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders.

I've already ran chkdsk /f /r

The Windows 10 version is 20H2 (build 19042.1052).

My laptop is Lenovo Ideapad 310 15isk.

Here is the SFCFix log:

Hello,

As you will know some of our helpers have increased workloads professionally, and this has resulted in a slower response time for Windows Update threads.

I am checking to see if you still need help with this thread. If so please respond and this will bring your thread to our attention again. Thank you for your patience.

We will need to have a look at your Components hive.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file may be too large to upload here, if so, please upload to OneDrive or Dropbox and just provide the link in your next post.

Hello :-) ,

Your components hive is very small and I believe it has been damaged in some way. There may be a backup of an earlier version of the file somewhere else on your system so we can look for this.

Please follow the instructions below.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this procedure is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Upload this SFCFix.txt file into your next post for me to analyse.

Based on the search I just did there are no backups of your components hive so we are out of options.

Your best course of action would be to attempt an in-place upgrade repair to fix your system. You will not lose any data. You can find all the details on how to do this in the tutorial here which explains the process in more detail - follow step 6.

You are welcome! Please let us know how it works out with the upgrade repair.

My system just updated to build 19042.1237 without need to repair.

The updates are working fine now!

Thanks!

Thank you for letting us know. I've marked this as solved.
