Hello,

Im running Win7 on a Gateway DX4300 desktop. The Windows Updater has repeatedly tried to install KB3006121. Every time it tries it fails.
What I've done:

1)I've run sfc /scannow which reports it did not find any integrity violations, but the CBS.log reports: ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT.
2) I've also run the System Update Readiness Tool. The CheckSur.log finds:

Found 10 errors
CSI Manifest All Zeros Total count: 4
CBS MUM Corrupt Total count: 3
CBS Catalog Corrupt Total count: 3

3) I've run SFCFix.exe which also reports on the SURT and CBS corruptions.

4) I've run Windows Fixit repair utility for Update problems. It did repair some issues that allowed a few other failed updates to succeed, but said it could not fix all the problems.

5) I've run Regbak and uploaded the Components file as well as the CBS.log to my Skydrive account:
https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=BC47F232B24AC22E&id=BC47F232B24AC22E!107

I've also attached the SFCFix.txt and CheckSUR.log

Thank you in advance.

Alex

Alex,

I've run Surt and below are the results. It found 7 errors and fix all of them. Bravo!

The CBS text file can be found on my skydrive under the file name cbs-DX4300.txt (to delineate it from the CBS file from my laptop issue):
http://1drv.ms/1DW9NMV

Awaiting further instruction... as when to try the KB3006121 install again.

Thank you,

Mark

Alex,

The install of KB3006121 was successful! Alex, your a miracle worker. Many thanks.

One last question. Before I contacted you I believe I attempted to change the permissions on all the files on my Desktop computer so that I could make the necessary changes I thought might fix the problem. A move, upon further contemplation, that I regretted. I believe that this only partially succeeded. Is there a way to return the files en mass ( especially system files) back to their original permissions?

Again, thank you for all you amazing help.

Mark

Hi Mark,

There is no easy way of restoring all the files set to the default owner and default security groups. There is also no 100% effective way of safely doing this. As some files/folders require SYSTEM to be the owner and others require TrustedInstaller.

Alex,

Thanks for your help. I think we can mark this one as solved.

I am experiencing an entirely different and unrelated issue on this computer, but I believe this will require a new thread on the Windows 7/Windows Vista Forum.

Many thanks again for your amazing expertise.
