Hi on the 13/07/2013 my updates stopped working and i have been unable to download any updates since.
My system is windows 7 ultimate 64bit SP1.

i have tried usual things including temp disabling antivirus, firewall, running cc cleaner, running supera antispyware adn adaware,

I also tried 2 different windows dignostic update tools which said it had fixed problems but it still doesn't work.

I have attached a poicture of the results from on of those diagnostic tools.

I would appreciate any help as i really dont want to have to re install windows

Many ThanksView attachment 4702update.jpg

Hello nimble, welcome to Sysnative!

Has this computer been off between 23/10/2012-30/7/2013? There's nothing in your logs during this period and I can't work out where it's gone.

0x8024402c is a networking error. What AV and firewall are you using? Can you disable them temporarily, reboot then see if this problem goes away? Enable them afterwards though.

thanks very much for taking a look for me. I am unsure what happened to the missing logs. This computer is a my backup workstation from the office it was setup on a domain but i have had it at home for over 6 months and the updates were working fine until recently. It uses esset antivirus and windows firewall. I disabled both including the startup entries and am still receiving the same error.

It has changed slightly now becuause it used to see the number of updates i needed then fail downloading them. Now it simply says Windows could not search for new updates with the same error code.

Thanks

Hi nimble,

In the screenshot you provided, it mentioned corrupt files but I can't see any reference to these in your logs. Let's run a SFC scan and see what it finds:

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    ping windowsupdate.com

  4. Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colours by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
  5. Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post please.

And can you post your WindowsUpdate.log please?

Hey Tom Thanks once again. I will definitely run these scans tonight. I think the mystery of missiing files could be that i have two users. One is local and one is connected to the office domain. I have admin privilidges on both. But the network guy switched me from my local user account for the machine to a proper one setup for the office domain around the time you say there are missing files. I have continued using the user account connected to the domain althought the PC is no longer on the domain and now notice the computer actually seems to run better as the local user.

I think i should switch back to my old local user account as there is a delay when saving files in the account connected to the office domain.

Now shall i run these scans on both users or you prefer we just stick to the original account for now.

Sorry hope thats not too confusing

Many thanks

It's a good suggestion but the account that you use won't make a difference to the CBS logging I'm afraid :) Those commands will return the same output regardless of the user you're logged in as, so just pick whichever one is most convenient for you!

Thanks heres the results.

Hi nimble,

As I suspected, it is indeed a networking problem and as you can see, your computer can't ping the update servers. This is what it should have looked like:

Code:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\System32>ping windowsupdate.com

Pinging windowsupdate.com [67.215.65.132] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=50
Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=17ms TTL=51
Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=17ms TTL=51
Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=19ms TTL=51

Ping statistics for 67.215.65.132:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 17ms, Maximum = 25ms, Average = 19ms

C:\Windows\System32>

I'm not quite sure what's interfering with Windows Update at the moment but would like to get some more information in the form of an OTL log:

OTL

Please download OTL (by OldTimer) from the link below and save it to your Desktop.

  1. Disable all anti-virus and anti-malware software to prevent them inhibiting OTL in any way. If you are unsure how to do this, see THIS.
  2. Double-click OTL.exe to run it.
  3. Click Run Scan to start OTL.
  4. When OTL finishes scanning, two logs, OTL.txt and Extras.txt will open.
  5. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of both of these logs into your next post please.

Thanks so much Tom

I am travelling for work should be back at this machine tomorrow night. Will do this for you as soon as i can.

appreciate it ....alot

Hi nimble,

No worries, thanks for letting me know! I'm in no rush so just reply at a time that's convenient for you :)

Tom

Hmm, no luck there either. Can you try rebooting into Safe Mode with Networking, then seeing if Windows Update will work? This will establish whether it is software interfering with Windows Update.

Tom

cheers Tom

I tried three times and windows update doesn't open in safe mode -with networking

many Thanks
