I tried to install it automatically, manually, with dism, trying to fix Windows Update, nothing works.

DISM log from manual installation (dism /online /add-package /packagepath:h:\downloads\kb\Windows8.1-KB4512488-x64.cab) attached.

Any help would be appreciated.

I can't, it's about 1GB, 20MB compressed. It says it's too large to attach.

Any other way?

Thanks.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.

Hmmm... You sure it is safe to send components registry file on public forum?

Not 100% sure about the error code, came to this forum seeking some other thing. I thought it would be a good idea to try to ask for help, as You seem to help people a lot. It was like that since the update came out - every time I reboot it says that update is being installed, but it doesn't install it. I mean it fails. I was trying everything I could think of, to make it work, then gave up for months.

Thanks!

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system through Windows Update just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.

All others. Last one was Windows Defender (KB2267602, 2019-09-05), last not Windows Defender was some NET security update (KB4507422, 2019-08-18) ... Can't find any strictly windows security update installed in history. I guess it's because it is waiting to install this one first. Maybe it has something to do with GWX app, that is supposed to prevent from updating to Windows 10? But there were no problems before. Or some kind of virus?I do monitor processes manually with Microsoft Process Explorer, searched for rootkits as well, nothing found. Monitoring startup changes (services, registry etc) as well, nothing that took my attention. Windows is original and activated (from MSDNAA).

This is definitely a Windows Update issue and not malware of any kind.

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and type in cmd.
2.After you find the Command Prompt, right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
3. Copy and paste the following into the Command Prompt:

reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\COMPONENTS

4. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
5. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
6. Copy and paste Package_for_RollupFix~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~9600.19134.1.7 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
7. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.

You don't need to be that precise in instructions for me, but thank your for your effort. Here's the file.

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows8.1-KB4457129-x64.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows8.1-KB4457129-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

Go ahead and do so if prompted. Let me know what errors if any come up. If you do get errors, please zip/attach your CBS.log

Note: If you get the message that no packages that require processing were found, use the following command instead:

dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows8.1-KB4457129-x64.cab\Windows8.1-KB4457129-x64.cab

If successful, retry the update that failed and attach CBS.log if it fails again.

Sorry, but I don't trust unofficial sources, so extracted the cab myself from msu. On first try got a blue screen with "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED", and some other apps crashed before it. Retrying...

Hey, that fixed the problem! Update installed successfully! I wonder what do You get from helping people like me...
Can I ask one more question? How did you know that Package_for_RollupFix~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~9600.19134.1.7 was in KB4457129 update? Via FRST64 log? Doesn't seem to be such an info in there.
