Good day/evening,

I've been battling this same error code for days, since Dec 12 to be exact. I've run out of "self-help" steps, hoping some one out there can help.

Following the instructions on the forum's sticky:
1) Register on forum: here I am
2) SFC Scan: no problems were reported
3) SURT/DISM Scan: found multiple problems, downloaded missing packages per Microsoft webpage instrutioncs, rerun SURT multiple times until CheckSUR.log was clean, but I'm still getting error 80073701 when installing KB4471318. Attaching CheckSUR.log just in case.
4) Run SFCFix: seems to not show any problems, SFCFix.log attached
5) Export/Upload CBS Folder: CBS.zip attached. It does seem to show problems, but I don't quite know how to interpret this file.

Thank you in advance for any help/guidance you can provide.

Hello and welcome,

Please zip all files in the folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS and attach it to your next reply.
Note: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the download link.

Hey PeterJ,

Thank you for the welcome, for the reply and for your time.

As requested, I've shared the contents of the CBS folder. Please let me know if you have a problem accessing it - this is the first time I've attempted to share a file with the world in Google Drive so I am not sure if I did it correctly.

CBS_folder.zip

Again, thank you very much for your help!!!

You did it very well.

Remove Update Manually
1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt.
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, then press enter.
wusa /uninstall /KB:4462923

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

Good Morning PeterJ,

Followed your instructions. As soon as I entered the command, a "Windows Update Standalone Installer" window appeared with the message "Searching for updates on this computer...". A few seconds later (maybe 50 or 60 seconds later) another window appeared with the message "The update KB4462923 is nothet installed on this computer." I clicked on the OK button on this latter window. At this point both windows closed, and the command prompt window did not contain any message.

Does this mean it could not find the Update, or does this mean that it actually removed it?

Edit: I checked in the "View update history" of the "Windows Update" and it seems KB4462923 was successfully installed on Oct 12, 2018. Not sure if this history list actually checks actual install changes, or if it simply checks a log and its giving me a "false positive".

Try to uninstall it at Control Panel - Windows Update - Installed Updates and report the result.

Hmm... It is not in that list:
KB4462923_Not_Found.PNG

But as I mentioned before, it does appear in the "Update History":
KB4462923_In_Update_History.PNG

I looked at some Update packages that I downloaded from Microsoft a few days ago when I ran the first SURT scan (at that time I downloaded packages that the CheckSUR.log reported missing, put them in the "Windows/CheckSur/packages" folder and reran the SURT scan). This package KB4462923 was one of them. So I took the liberty just now of trying to install that KB4462923 package again, but I get a message that "The update is not applicable to your computer". So I am guessing that it should have never been installed in the first place. But I am not sure how it can be in the "Update History" page and not in the "Uninstall an update" page.

I guess the package that I started this thread for (KB4471318) just attempted to install again, and it failed. I'm turning off Auto Windows Update so that the computer does not continue downloading and attempting to install this package for now.

Let me know if you want me to take any further steps.

Thanks again PeterJ. You have a great evening!!

Please do following:

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and choose Control Panel.
2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
3. Select the Programs group.
4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Server Manager dialog.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps. You can minimize it if you wish but keep it open.
5. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

6. Right-click on the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator.
7. Copy and paste KB4462923 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
8. When the scan is complete, a message will display that 'SearchReg.txt' is saved in the same folder FRST was started from. Notepad will open this file also. Close Notepad and attach the file 'SearchReg.txt' to your next reply.
9. You may close any remaining open windows now.

Wow, for a package that is apparently not installed, it sure does get called out in the registry many times.
Attaching the SearchReg.txt files (compressed) as requested. I'm sure it does not matter, but note that I changed lines 2 and 3 in the file to remove my logon username.

Step 1:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.

1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
3. Press the Fix button.
4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2:
Check Windows Update again and report the result.
If it fails, run sfc /scannow again and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Good Morning, and Happy New Year!

So I followed the instructions above in Step 1. No problem there.

I proceeded to Step 2, which was attempt to install KB4471318 again, AND IT WORKED!!
So I did not run the "sfc" command since it seems to be only needed if the Windows Update failed again.

For the purpose of completeness, I am attaching the "Fixlog.txt", with some personal account information removed.

THANK YOU very much PeterJ for your help and your time.
