Hi,

I keep getting the Windows Update error 0x800f0831 since the August security update (I do not remember exactly when this originally happened), and I said I would wait until September to try to install the new one, I thought it would work at that time.
I tried
  1. performing SFC and DISM scans;
  2. resetting Windows Update with the Windows Update Tool;
  3. installing manually every update from the Windows Update Catalog (which didn't work, I kept getting 'The following updates were not installed' error);
  4. troubleshooting with the Windows Update troubleshooter (which I didn't have much faith in from the get-go);
  5. disabling NET Framework 3.5/4.8 from control panel;
  6. repair Windows with a clean .iso from their website (using a command prompt code, but I do not remember what error I got since it was a while ago).
I saw some posts that said to uninstall/disable MalwareBytes from the computer, but I don't have it installed at all.

I have attached my CBS/DISM logs in an archive (the CBS log is 240mb, this is why they are archived). I will happily repeat any step from above with your instructions since this is an error I want to fix so badly :(.

Thank you in advance for helping!

Hi I'm Gary R,

I'm a Security Analyst, and a Windows Update Trainee, and I'd like to help you with your problems.

As a trainee, any instructions I give you must first be checked by a qualified update expert, before I post them. This will by necessity introduce some delay to any of my replies, so please be patient.

I am looking over your logs now, and will be back as soon as I've finished analysing them.

Whilst I'm doing that, can you do the following for me ....

  • Thanks

Thank you Gary,

I will reply tomorrow, as soon as I get home from work. Thank you again for helping me and I am sorry for the delay!

No problem, talk to you then.

PS ... unless you're querying something I've posted, then there's no need to quote me in any of your subsequent replies, it just makes your posts longer.

Thanks.

It may take me a while to go through it to find whether it's telling me what I need to know or not.

Back ASAP.

Should I try to update Windows again?

I looked at the posts above and it looked like I could go and update. I pressed update, and now I am getting this (screenshot attached). At least it's another error haha. 0x80073701. Also CBS.log attached.
