Am having issues with a relatively new install of Windows Server 2022 Standard. I will to install the Remote Access role to the server. But when attempting install, it fails instantly telling me to restart the server. This same error occurs no matter how many times it is rebooted.

To attempt to fix this, I first ran SFC /SCANNOW which said there it found issues but is unable to fix.

So next I ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth which is where I am getting the below error:

"Error: 0x800f081f

The source files could not be found.
Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see Configure a Windows Repair Source.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log"

Running the same command with the source specified returns the same error. I'd rather not rebuild this server, so any help attempting to fix this would be much appreciated. All files attached.

Hi I'm Gary R,

I'm a Security Analyst, and a Windows Update Trainee, and I'd like to help you with your problems.

As a trainee there may be times when my instructions must first be checked by a qualified update expert, before I post them. This will by necessity introduce some delay when/if that occurs, so please be patient.

I am looking over your logs now, and will be back as soon as I've finished analysing them. (as it's getting late where I am, it will likely be tomorrow morning, my time GMT)

Can you please do the following for me ...

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • The file will likely be too large to upload here, if so please upload to a file sharing service.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

Please post me the link to the file

Hi Gary, thank you for your reply.

Completely understand and no point doing it if late for you :)

Components file attached.

  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Next ...

  • Click Search button and type Command Prompt
  • From the results, right click on the Command Prompt icon, and select Run as administrator
  • A Command Window will open.
  • Copy paste the command below into it, then press Enter
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Once DISM has finished running ...

If it fails, please post me your latest CBS.log

If it completes successfully ...

  • Restart the computer.
  • Run the command SFC /SCANNOW in an elevated command prompt

If it fails, please post me your latest CBS.log

If it completes successfully, please try updating your machine.

It's been 3 days since my last post was posted ....... do you still need help with your problem ?

If I don't hear back from you in the next 24 hours I will presume not, and close this topic.

Sorry Gary, never got a notification for this so didn't realise you'd replied.

I will attempt the fix now and get back to you.

DISM seemed to run successfully but upon restart, SFC then failed again.

SFC.txt log below. And CBS.log attached.

Looking over your latest log now, back ASAP.

Going to need to consult on something I found in your log, so might be a delay in me getting back to you.

Hopefully it won't be a long one.

Hi Gary, the above did work at cleaning up the SFC issues, but I was still unable to install the roles and features I originally ran the scan to fix.

I instead decided to wipe the machine and start from scratch, which seems to have work.

Thanks for all your help though and is much appreciated!

You're welcome, thanks for letting me know.

Glad you were able to resolve things, even if you did have to re-install.

I'll mark this topic as solved.
