Display turned off during Win7 x64 SP1 boot, forced restart with button, then BSOD before loading Windows

Hello all,

As the title describes this was my most recent issue. I have had other issues in the past with this PC (prior to replacing the motherboard) and most had seemed to be resolved until yesterday when I booted and this happened.

Booted to desktop, then my display turned off saying no input. I wiggled the DVI connector and no response. Cycled power on the monitor with no result. Forced restart with front panel button and computer posted, but before reaching the windows loading screen I received a BSOD.

I was able to F8 and load previously known good config and boot into windows. I have attempted to create a restore point but it fails every time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jeremy

After about 45 minutes of gaming my display turned off again. I rebooted via front panel buttons, got back into windows and started a program and did it again.

Each time I'm getting the popup window saying "Windows has recovered from an unexpected error" but with the display turning off I have no idea what the failure is.

This is the first time this has happened while gaming.

Open administrative command prompt (ACP) and type or copy and paste:

sfc /scannow
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

Find the new text file on the desktop > post a share link

When available update the progress with the steps in posts #5 and #7.

For any BSOD run the Sysnative log collector to collect new log files.

I attempted the cmd prompts from post #9 but the windows closed as soon as they completed.

I was able to run DDU and remove my old AMD driver info (uninstalled with restart in safe mode, uninstalled in safe mode again) then removed all of the nVidia drivers as well (uninstalled with restart in safe mode, uninstalled in safe mode again with shut down) booted back up and installed latest drivers.

I was able to game for about 4 hours without issue in one game that was having a lot of freeze issues prior to the driver clean install. I'll test on another game soon.

Attempted findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" however the window just closes after it completes.

I performed chkdsk /r /v E: (E drive is the partition that I run my games from) and a few issues were repaired IIRC.

I just ran sfc /scannow again but the window closed and I could not see the results.

I will attempt to run the overnight scans one of these evenings.

Please follow these posting instruction to encourage other members to help:

(they may not want to view data in multiple threads)

Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions | Sysnative Forums

For the Windows update thread:

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Filedropper or SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

FRST Scan:

Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
  1. Right-click the file FRST64.exe to run the tool as administrator.
  2. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  3. Press the Scan button.
  4. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  5. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

I was able to uninstall and reinstall the Ethernet controller.

I also noticed today that I have a PCI Device and USB Controller in Device Manager not installed and Win7 is unable to tell me what these "other devices" actually are.

Results;

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1ADB&CC_0C8000 is nVidia USB type C on my 2060 Super, which requires Win10 (or so I read)

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1ADA&CC_0C0330 is nVidia USB 3.10 eXtensible Host controller, which also requires Win10 (or so I read)
