[SOLVED] DISM stuck at 40% / Windows Updates fails to install updates - 80200001

Good day,

I'm having issues performing Windows Updates for months now on my Windows 8.1 system. What initially happened is that after shutting off the PC and starting it up again, Windows was installing updates at boot. However, it failed to install it and undoing all the changes, which took HOURS. After the system finally started up, I took a check of the Windows Updates logs, and found that there were hundreds of updates that failed to be installed. At that point, I decided to shut off Windows Updates completely to prevent the same thing happening to me.

A few months back, I upgraded my Motherboard, and had issues with drivers and decided to perform a Refresh, which quickly fixed the driver issue. I attempted to download updates again (a small batch of 30 updates) and was successful this time. But still left to stop downloading updates until I say so. Afterwards, I decided to download and install 100 updates as a batch. Unfortunately, the issue came back, it failed to install updates. I performed DISM to fix this, but sadly, got stuck at 40% for hours. Reading through the solution, it seems that the IT pros here are able to fix these problems, and I was hoping that you can also help me with this. Even better, can anyone show me how to read CBS logs and how to fix these errors? That would be greatly appreciated.

Unable to attach the logs, however. I'll try again.

Thanks for the reply. As of right now, I'm focused on gaming and not sure if Windows 10 will suit my needs, as I've read a lot in the forums that there's still a bunch of issues that show up on Windows 10. Driver-wise, I won't get that as I have the 1151 Chipset Mobo so I can upgrade to it without that much issues.

So for now, I would not be upgrading to Windows 10. But may think about it over time.

As of the status of the updates, I really have a lot of pending updates... 280 updates that are 4GB in size. Yikes. Would like to get this fixed ASAP, can you help me out with the logs that I provided? I would also be more than happy to learn how to fix them myself.
 
Thanks for the info. Please do the following so I can begin looking into your issue.

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start

button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Thanks for the log. Please do the following to replace the corrupt files.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.


  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please


Step#2 - SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start

button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

The last time I ran DISM, it was at 40% for 4 hours+. I'm not sure if it was the same error message, but let me run it for some time then.
 
OK, there's a few things we can try. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Clean Boot

Perform a Clean boot of your machine following the instructions in the link below.

Step#2 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Try this again and let me know if it gets past 40%. Even if it gets stuck please send me the logs from below.

    copy %windir%\logs\dism\dism.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\dism.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread. Also zip/upload the dism.txt.

Now on a Clean-boot system, running DISM now. I'll post again in a few hours for the results. :)
 
Okay, so interesting result this time. After a clean boot operation, DISM got up to 40% once more. But after about 30 mins or so, DISM failed, showing an error : 0x80240021.

What should I do next?

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
    button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
    Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Awesome! DISM successfully finished! At this point, I can go ahead and install the updates, right?

Also, judging from the results you quoted, does this mean that when I performed DISM, it tries to get the source files from these payloads, but they're corrupt on my system so DISM fails to replace them? Trying to learn what's going on on the system.

Yes we can try installing updates at this point.

Actually, DISM found that some payload files were missing and didn't have replacement files anywhere. So we had to put good copies back in the Winsxs directory so DISM could find and use them.
