Tried to upgrade windows 8.1 and I got this error - "code 80073712 Windows Update ran into a problem".

So ran sfc /scannow which reported to have fixed the errors. However, on running Windows Update again, I got the same error code above. So, executed DISM, only for it to land on a BSOD at 40%. After scan disk, I executed the latter again, this time being stuck at 40% for hours together (killed with a Ctrl + C to exit).

Downloaded SFCFix.exe which executed sfc followed by DISM, yet again only for DISM to be stuck at 40% for a long time. I killed the command (Ctrl + C) and copied the CBS logs (zipped version attached).

I found another thread with a similar problem, but didn't use the solution as the thread clearly mentioned the fix for specific to the user.

Can someone please help? I'm fed up trying to fix the issue and landing up in failure each time.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. This will take a couple of rounds of fixing so hold off on trying Windows Update until all the issues are resolved. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - Verify Corruption is fixed
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Items for your next post
1. SFCFix.txt
2. CBS.txt

For future reference, if you right-click on the file and select Send To...Compressed (zipped folder) it will zip up the CBS.log file to less than 1MB and you will be able to attach it. But it is no problem sending via SendSpace as well.

The logs look much better. All the missing files have been replaced. Please try the following now.

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Followed the steps above

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Getting an error for this command

C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Error: 87

DISM doesn't recognize the command-line option "Scan".
For more information, refer to the help by running DISM.exe /?.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

This was stuck at 40% for a long time. So I killed (Ctrl + C) and restarted the machine and executed it again. However, it was stuck at 40% the second time as well.

I've attached CBS log file under the file name 'CBS - 2.zip'.

Thanks again for the help.

@BrianDrab,

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

is stuck at 40% for more than an hour now. Shall I kill and send the CBS log?

Yes go ahead and do that. In addition to the CBS.log, please send me the C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Are you intending on upgrading to Windows 10?

Have attached CBS.log (CBS - 3.zip) and dism.log.

Yup, you guessed it right. Want to upgrade to Windows 10 before Microsoft seals the offer off!

Excellent. Please redo the following steps again.

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Looks like

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

is stuck at 40% for good. As before, shall I kill it to upload the CBS and DISM logs?
