Hey there, I've been getting alot of BSODS lately with alot of bugcodes.
Things I've tried before to solve the BSOD problems:
  • Driver verifier
  • MEMtest (no errors)
  • Uninstall McAfee -> install MSE
  • Update drivers
  • Ran SFC /scannow (no bad results)
  • Ran WDO + let some script run (a friend checked the output) -> no bad results

· OS - Vista/ Windows 7? --Windows 7
· x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? --x64
· What was original installed OS on system? --Vista
· Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? -- purchased from retailer
· Age of system (hardware) --I dont know how to check this.
· Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? --Yes did a reinstall at 16 june 2012.

· CPU -- AMD Athlon II X4 620
· Video Card --
1023MB GeForce GTX 550 Ti (ASUStek Computer Inc)
· MotherBoard --
Acer RS780HVF (AM2)
· Power Supply - brand & wattage -- Im not sure how to check this.

· System Manufacturer -- Acer
· Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) -- Acer Aspire M5201

Recommendations:

Due to the age of the system, Download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

I went through the steps you were given at SevenForums. I have a few questions for you:

  1. Have you upgraded any hardware at any time, specifically memory?

  2. Have you attempted to flash your BIOS yet? Having your BIOS out of date may be contributing to crashes by not providing full support for your hardware in Windows 7.

I also recommend you update/replace/remove the following drivers:

mcdbus.sys Tue Feb 24 03:34:07 2009 (49A3CD1F)
MagicISO SCSI Host Controller driver
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=mcdbus.sys

To remove drivers, do so by uninstalling the device or software associated with the driver. Devices can be uninstalled through device manager, and then the device itself should be physically removed from the system if possible.

3rd Party Drivers:
The following is for information purposes only. My recommendations were given above. The drivers that follow belong to software or devices that were not developed by Microsoft. Any drivers in red should be updated/replaced/removed. You can find links to the driver information and where to update the drivers in the section after the code box:

Hey there,

I'm glad someone is willing to help me!

Have you upgraded any hardware at any time, specifically memory?Yes I've only replaced my graphics card because the old one was defect.

Have you attempted to flash your BIOS yet? Having your BIOS out of date may be contributing to crashes by not providing full support for your hardware in Windows 7.No, although someone told me to, I'm not sure how to do this, and I'm scared to see something horrible happen to my PC because I don't know what to do.

Thanks,
Thomas

p.s: followed your instructions.

Unfortunately, there is not much information provided by acer for updating the BIOS. I could find no steps for your particular BIOS update. I'll have to look into this further. My guess is you want to run the .bat file, but I do not want to say with certainty and have it result in your system being unable to turn on.

I would suggest contacting acer for support with the BIOS update.

Edit: It appears that the .bat file you find in the .zip will create a key for USB or floppy booting. Do you have a floppy drive? Do you have floppy disks?

Edit2: The .bat file may not be compatible with 64-Bit Windows. I will try to run it on 32-Bit Windows and supply you with the appropriate file to put on a floppy disk or USB drive.

Hey there, thanks for your effort at first, and unfortunately I don't have a floppy/floppy drive.

I hope to hear from you soon!
Thomas

Inside the file you downloaded from Acer Support < Downloads & Support Documents - Aspire / Aspire M5201, you will find a .zip folder called AFUWIN.zip. Uncompress that file and run AFUWIN.exe to install the latest BIOS through Windows.

What were the results of the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor?

Everything was compatible, but it says age of empires III has known issues*, but I've only recently installed that and the BSOD's have been going on long before that.. (*i got a outputfile which I can't upload for some reason)

On the other side.. i will install latest BIOS through Windows tomorrow, and I'll post results.

Thanks,
Thomas

A helpful guide: How to use Afuwin Flash Utility?

You should set up the flash as in the image for 7-4 and then hit flash as instructed in step 7-4.

Warning

Make sure to set UAC back to default after flashing is complete and the system has restarted.

It tells me to check box: Destroy CMOS checksum, when i hold mouse on that it says i need to set it up after next reboot, but im not sure how to do that.. what should I do?

when trying to do with setting 'nothing' instead of 'destroy cmos checksum' I get this warning:

That means you need to enter the BIOS after flashing and restarting and load optimal settings from within the BIOS.

Do you know how to enter your BIOS when the system turns on?

Yes I do know how to get into it, but im not sure how to load optimal settings from within the BIOS.

Enter your BIOS. Go to the Exit Screen. There should be an option to load optimal settings or failsafe settings.

If those two options do not exist, there should be an option for loading default settings.

Do you see any of those three options within your BIOS Exit screen?

It may be phrased "Setup Defaults".

From the flashing utility I can select this options aswell:
-Load ROMs optimal settings
-Load ROMs files failsafe

Thomas

Yes, but those will not clear your CMOS for the BIOS flash properly. You need to Destroy the CMOS Checksum in order for the BIOS flash to succeed as I understand it.

  1. Flash with the settings in the image in 7-4.
  2. Restart the system.
  3. Enter your BIOS.
  4. Go to the Exit screen.
  5. Load Optimal Settings.
  6. Restart your System.
  7. Setup UAC to default settings.

Okay thanks for clearing my mind up, got it!
I'm going to follow the steps now and, hopefully, report back soon.

Thanks,
Thomas

You're welcome. For a little further information:

What I believe is occurring with the Destroy CMOS Checksum step is your old BIOS version is being completely removed and then replaced with the new BIOS version. This should be safer than simply overwriting the version since overwriting could potentially lead to CMOS corruption. One danger in removing the old BIOS settings and replacing them is if the system is interrupted after the removal stage and before the new settings are written. There would be no BIOS version to load on startup if the BIOS flash is interrupted. That is why it is recommended to never interrupt a BIOS flash.

There are ways around that error, but they have a greater chance of turning your PC into a paperweight. Are you opposed to running Windows Vista instead of Windows 7?
