Desktop icon position is not saved

Hello everyone,

Today I noticed really strange issue. My desktop icons position is not saved any more. I can move and arrange them as I want, but if I reboot, they will arrange the same way as when option "Auto arrange icons" is used, and I'm not using it. Also, if I right click and refresh, position is also lost and icons auto-arrange. Can anyone help me to solve this issue? Thanks.

Regards.

This is odd. Typically clicking Refresh will lock it in. You say today (the 18th) you noticed the problem. It worked fine before that? Did you make any other changes to your system?

Have you scanned for malware?

Typically, but in my case, refresh puts them back. I did backup of key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop where desktop position is saved and deleted keys inside it, and they are not re-created. I checked permissions and they are fine. I did scan for malware with Malware Byters Anti-Malware and nothing found. I also used TDSKiller and now I'm scanning with RogueKiller which some member on some other forum reported found some Zero virus which was causing it, I'll see if it founds anything on my PC.

And I did not make any changes, just shut down my computer and next day this issue appears. I also tried to create new profile but same issue, and safe mode also has this problem.

I don't know what else to try.

I might suggest running sfc /scannow to see if any system files are bad. I saw one report where going to an earlier Restore Point fixed it, but those are usually for driver issue.

Unfortunately, I keep System Restore disabled.
 Why? I see no reason to do that.

If sfc found nothing wrong, and your malware scans were clean, then I am really at loss otherwise. Hopefully someone else might have some ideas.

Well, because of space issues, SSD is not really large, only 128GB.

I hope someone else has some ideas.

That is not really a good reason. The feature is designed to reduce its foot space when disk space becomes scarce and will even disable itself if free disk space becomes critical.

I ask around to see if anyone else has any ideas.

Well maraaa, your issue has not gone by without much discussion. Unfortunately, it seems you have tried just about everything already. Creating a new user profile to fix a corrupt profile was the suggestion felt most promising, but you already tried that too. :(

Are there more than one user on this system? If so, do their icons stick?

One suggestion worth trying is to change your screen resolution, reboot and then rearrange your icons the way you want and reboot again to see if they stick. If they do behave properly, you can try changing the resolution back and start over. I might suggest you just rearrange a few instead of all of them during the test process to save you some time.

There are more profiles, but I don't use them, one was left from Windows 8.1 when I did migration from one to other since I had some problem with profile. Other is just for adding permissions to that user for all discs so I can access them via my phone. Changing resolution did not help.

But it seems that I'm not the only one with this issue. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links to other forums, so I won't, but one is Microsoft's, other is related only to Windows 10 and there I see many users with this issue but no solution. Some mentions Eset Smart Security as cause which I have, others say that they don't have it installed but still have the problem. And un-installation of Eset does not help.

Sure you can post links to other forums! Please do! We think helping folks should be a cooperative effort, not a competitive one. That's how we all learn and share - and that's what forums are all about.

Hmmm, while not in every case ESET is mentioned in most. And I note one person said he did a system restore to the day before installing ESET and the problem cleared. System restore to before the problem started helped others as well. Another said the problem started immediately after installing ESET NOD.

The good news is with 11 pages of complaints on the MS community thread and the OP on top of getting folks to submit useful data, MS should be looking into and I am sure will either fix the problem or discover where other developer are messing up so they can fix the problem.

If this were a Microsoft caused problem, I think there would be many 1000s of upset users and that is not happening.

I also see on page 10 of the MS thread there is a quote from ESET tech support saying they are able to reproduce the problem. That is HUGE when troubleshooting issues whether it is with an ESET product or Windows or something else. I fix will be coming soon, I have no doubts.
