I have the strangest thing happening with a new laptop. When I move the cursor or pointer it sometimes makes a button appear under the arrow. It happens a mostly when I have just clicked on something. I can't find anything like it addressed on the net. The button looks like the photo below.

I have checked all of the settings regarding the touchpad but there is nothing there that indicates why this is happening. No strange buttons are checked or unchecked. Any ideas? :banghead:

That is where I took the screenshot, but the box is not checked. Besides when you check it and use it, it give you a larger circle that shrinks down to the small size and disappears. My small circle just appears randomly when I touch the left click key on my touchpad.

I'm using Windows 7 Home in an new Acer laptop. I have a two year old Dell running the same OS and never had the problem. I had to give up on the Dell because the hardware was terrible. I have an old Acer that I had a Windows update issue with and was afraid I wasn't going to be able to fix it. But you guys helped me resolve it. Before I was able to resolve it, I bought a new Acer with Windows 7 because I didn't want 8 or 10.

Does the laptop have a touch screen? That looks like the icon that appears when windows registers a tap

No touch screen, but maybe the hardware/software for the touchpad is set up for touchscreen even though I have Windows 7. Maybe my click button is very sensitive. I don't know. It is just irritating. I may not be able to stop it. Thanks.

Have you got a graphics tablet connected?

If not, try this workaround

Click start -> type services.msc
Scroll down and find Tablet PC Input Service
Double click it and change the startup type to Disabled
Reboot the computer

Okay. It helped but didn't eliminate it. It now only does it about 50% of the time that it used to do it. One other thing I noticed and forgot to mention is that once in awhile the pointer (cursor) will also show a hand (or glove) at the end of the pointer. I don't know if that gives you any more insight to the issue or not. It seems like you are on the right track however.

Check the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\TabletPC\TurnOffPenFeedback - should be set to 1
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\TabletPC\TurnOffPenFeedback - should also be set to 1

I think you need to create the key TabletPC and then create a value TurnOffPenFeedback (DWORD) and set it to 1.

Back up the registry before you do it though.

Ok. I have something coming up in an hour and I have to get ready so it will be tomorrow before i can try it. Thanks and I'll let you know.

Had the time and made the entry. Rebooted and played with laptop for awhile. Didn't fix the problem. I also thought of something else that may be of some help in identifying the problem. Sometimes instead of the "bulls eye or button" that appears, a four way arrow appears. You know, the one that points to all four directions. I don't know if that helps any or not. I'll wait to undo the registry changes I made until I hear back from you. Thanks.

Okay. I think I have figured out something in which you may have the answer. When I was working on my laptop moving the cursor around, all of a sudden the icons on my desktop got smaller. I have no idea what I did so I checked my settings. Everything was just as they should be. I did some searches on the net and couldn't find any help. I had established a restore point earlier in the day so did a system restore.

This morning as I was working, I kept getting the button and sometimes the arrows and sometimes something that looks like a bunch of pyramids. I'm sorry but I don't know the technical name for the symbols. I was working in Excel and all of a sudden the Excel sheet got smaller. This was just like the icons on the desktop yesterday. This time all I had to do was click on the undo button.

Being of somewhat clear mind this morning, I am of the opinion that my touchpad is acting like a mouse with a wheel. I'm not doing it intentionally but I think that is what is happening. I may be hitting some combination of the pad and the click buttons to cause these strange things. Could that be possible? If so, what am I doing and is there a way to turn it off so the touchpad only works as a touchpad and not a mouse? Thanks.

BTW, as I was typing this message, I used my finger on the pad to move the cursor to the upper left of my reply and all of a sudden a message popped up saying if I left this page my information would not be saved. I wasn't trying to leave the page. I just ran my finger across the touchpad. For some reason doing that conveyed to the website I wanted to go to a different page. (???????)

I think I've worked out the problem - you're along the right lines. It seems Windows is using your touchpad as a touchscreen and has enabled pen flicks.

In control panel, open the Pen and Touch settings. You may need to search for it. There should be a tab for enabling and disabling pen flicks.

Also, in control panel go to the mouse settings and see if there is a section for touchpad settings. See if there are any options in there regarding pen flicks or similar.

This is why I have disabled the touchpad on my notebook and use a real mouse - I kept accidently brushing the touchpad with my thumbs sending the cursor all over the place. Fortunately, most (if not all) notebooks make it easy to disable the touchpad with a Fn + F-key combination. On my Toshiba, it is Fn + F9.

Well I couldn't find anything about pen and touch settings. I even did a search using different terms. I also checked what mouse setting I could find and not much luck. Then it hit me. Because I had had issues with my Dell touchpad on my Dell laptop, I had attached the pointing device icon to my taskbar. Luckily I did the same thing when I first started up this laptop. I open it to "pointing device properties". I went through everything and I found a tab that said Device Settings. On that window there was a button that simply said "settings". I think I hit the jackpot when I opened it. Below is a screenshot of the window it opened.

Almost every box was checked. The problem was that I wasn't using two fingers to make moves on my touchpad. It was doing those things with only one finger. I uncheck all of the boxes except one that has to remain checked. I think that will solve the issue, but I want to use the computer for a day or two to make sure. Please keep this thread open and I will get back to you. Thanks for your assistance.

When I am at a desk, I usually use a mouse. But most of my work now I do in an easy chair with the laptop on the top of my lap. It's really hard to use a mouse in that situation. I appreciate the suggestion however.

I am exactly the same way. I use a Logitech M505 laser mouse that tracks on anything - including the fabric on my arm chair.

I've got a Logitech laser, but it doesn't do well on the arm of my chair. It could be that the fabric is a rough weave. But thanks for the tip.

Well it appears that my solution in post 16 did the trick. No more funny stuff with my touchpad. You can mark this thread solved. It sure is nice to have a place where I can ask questions, bounce ideas off people and get solutions to my computer problems. Thank all of you for the help.
