I have a DELL N5050 (my 1st computer) it worked fine w/ windows7, upon upgrade to Windows 10, it performed well for 5 months, now- a complete nothing, I tried the reset to OS 7, tried both saving my files trice, no luck- tried resetting to complete reset (I used the windows 7 reset disk supplied by DELL) it asks for a DELL administrator to log in to use this disk, I tried the "drivers disk" to no avail , plugged into my modem, no internet connection, my reset disk I made gave some hope, but I'm stuck and don't have a clue of the direction to go, I live 80 miles from any large town (where a Best Buy or computer store may be found)- ANY help from you folks who know the workings of my machine , would be greatly appreciated- Thanks Very Much:huh:. I do have a DELL N5051, it performs wonderful (Windows 7 OS)- as I stated I'm in the backwoods with satellite internet:eek:

Hi I have moved your thread from Tutorials to the regular Hardware support forum.

Just to be sure I understand, is the computer just 5 month old, or is that just how long it worked with W10? Is the computer still under warranty?

And you say, "now - a complete nothing" yet you appear to be able to start the computer. So exactly what do you mean by "complete nothing"?

My worries are that you have tried resetting back to W7 and other things, not sure there is a chance to recover, at this point. :(

You might check out the Dell Knowledge Base article, How to restore your Windows 7 computer to factory settings.

I thank you for the questions, as they will lead to a solution (I hope) I had Windows 7 until November 2015, I purchased the machine in 2012, the warrenty ran out 3 months ago (I had installed Windows 10 on my N5051 in August 2015, it did the same "crash" in February this year)- DELL sent me a windows 7 reboot disk and their technician performed all the necessary drivers and utilities install, under warranty. Yes I did try to reinstall Windows 7, can I completely wipe the hard drive and start fresh with windows 7? I will check out the DELL site and I hope to learn much from what happened (so not to make the same mistake again) Thanks to anyone who can enlighten me (I build custom woodwork, so technical stuff is a new "page" of my book of life's experiences) I can navigate on my Windows phone (Nokia 1020) and continue to acquire knowledge from folks such as on this site, I'm deeply Grateful for any help- Happy Spring from the Black Hills

You should be able to do this, assuming the factory recovery partition is still there as I am assuming that is what the Dell disk they sent you does. But I note the free update to W10 offer ends this July so time is running low.

The problem with wiping the disk and starting over (besides losing all your data) is you don't really learn what happened to avoid recurrence.

If you have data on the drive you don't want to lose, you might pull the drive and install it into an enclosure or use an adapter to attach it to another computer, then copy off the data. You could also format the boot partition from there. You don't really have to "wipe" the drive, just do a full (not quick) format on the boot partition. You could (should) also check the integrity of the disk by running chkdsk /r from that 2nd computer too.

I assume that removing the drive is a simple process, can I hook it up to my DELL 5051 via a USB cord? is there a "YOUTube" video that shows this process? Thanks very much for the help- Knowledge is the key to all the needed power anyone can use and stay happy!
