Hi,
I'm trying to update a Windows 2016 Server but after rebooting, goes to 100% then a message saying "we couldn't complete the update undoing changes" appears. It's HP Gen10 Server 512GB Ram, and plenty of storage space.
This is what I tried:
- SFC / scannow - no errors
- SFCFix
- Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - no errors
- Rename "SoftwareDistribution" and "System32\catroot2"
- Clean Boot (Only Microsoft services enabled)
- Download the update from Windows Catalog
- SConfig

Cumulative update kb4556813 and a previous one fails.

CBS folder: CBS.zip
WindowsUpdate.log attached.

Please help. I was fighting with it for over a month. 🔫

Hi!

There is a HTTP related failure reported. Can you tell me a bit more about the Server and the roles applied/installed onto it?

Also, please provide the following:

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right-click FRST64.exe and click Run as Administrator to run it as administrator. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already checked).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please attach the log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also attach that along with the FRST.txt in your reply.

thank you for your reply,
It is Opera PMS (Property Management System) for a Hotel. It has an apache web server. (I tried clean boot update as well)
I have FRST.txt and Addition.txt attached.
Thank you

Hi Softwaremaniac. I disabled all non-microsoft services from start-up and tried again. Went to 100% and then failed again. Apache was not running (no processes).
I cannot add Features like Windows Backup feature (only manually from dvd).

Ah, so I couldn't install Windows Backup Server because it couldn't start Windows Remote Management. Windows remote Management couldn't start because HTTP server is a dependency and it's missing in a Service list. That's what you told me the reason for Updates failing as well. I found HTTP server disabled in Registry HKLM with a startup value 4 - disabled. I changed to -2. And added Windows Backup Server feature with no problem. Then I tried Windows update and it went through.
OMG. Thank you for directing me to the HTTP Server issue. I'll definitely donate to your site. 🎆
