Hi,

Generally most programs run fine, but for the past few months Windows updates have been failing to work on my Lenovo Y510p Ideapad. I had to disable updates altogether because the installation of updates would fail so badly that the computer would lock up and be unusable. I was able to do a System Restore to an earlier time, I believe August of 2017, but no other recovery options work. I can't do a File Reset, I can't do a Fresh Installation, I can't do an in-place upgrade, and Windows Installation Media always fails with an unspecified error. Sfc /scannow returns no errors, as does DISM; however when I try to do something related to network drivers in particular, such as install LogMeIn Hamachi, I get an error saying the driver could not install due to a corrupt registry database. If I look in Network Connections, my Bluetooth, Ethernet, and WiFi connections display correctly whethere they're connected or not, however there is no longer any Local Area Network listed. To make things a bit more complicated, I had given this laptop to my brother before I moved overseas and I'm currently trying to help him fix this using remote desktop control through TeamViewer.

Here is my SFCFix logfile:

Hello and welcome! Since you have contacted me personally, I will be taking your thread.

Please zip and attach the following file: C:\Windows\system32\config\DRIVERS.

Copy the file to your Desktop before zipping the it. If you get the message that the file is in use, please reboot and try again.

Step 1 - Replace DRIVERS Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download the attached file and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the DRIVERS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current DRIVERS file and select rename. Rename it to DRIVERS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the DRIVERS folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Step 2 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Great! Any other issues?

I'm not sure, I wanted to wait until I heard back from you to try anything.

Should I try to run Windows Update now, or is it possible that updates for this now 4-year-old laptop (it originally ran Windows 8 I believe, I had used the free Windows 10 upgrade close to two years ago) are what caused the corruption in the first place?

I ask because while it wasn't running perfectly a year ago, it was more or less fine until the last Fall Creator's Update
