I applied the sfcfix.exe and have attached the txt file from the desktop. Please advise what to do next or for more detailed information. Many thanks. This is the only progress I have been able to make with the sfc scannow errors from the CBS.log

Before we try fixing that, please run the CheckSUR tool and post the log.

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from Fix Windows corruption errors such as 0x80070002 and 0x80070057
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your OneDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

OneDrive doesn't like files it can't scan for viruses - and it refuses to download for me.
Please attach the file to your response here - and/or zip it using an alternative compression tool (the builtin Windows one is perfectly good! )

Good - CheckSUR found and fixed 4 problems...

I'll post a fix protocol for these, sometime tomorrow - it's too late tonight :(
(unless one of the other wants to do it before I get back? <vbeg>)

So I assume that the issues I have are more difficult to rectify than originally thought? If you wish please hand me off to another member.

Nah - I've just been 'otherwise occupied' :) - trying to sort out about thirty other threads :(

I'll be back in a few minutes!

I've uploaded a file - mm2aa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\mm2aa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\mm2aa
or
DIR E:\mm2aa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\mm2aa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

I appreciate your time and efforts. Sometime luck is better than expertise.

Upon examining the CBS log I noticed there were a ton of "pending renames". They were all located in the windows subfolder winsxs/temp/pending renames. For safe keeping I zipped them up and then deleted all of them. When sfc ran again it came up without corruption and the cbs log indicates nothing failed to be repaired.

Again thanks for your time and maybe this thread can help someone else.

Oh dear! - that was NOT a good response :(
The system keeps careful track of those pending renames, and utilises them frequently.

Please post the new CBS.log file, and then run a CheckSUR scan...

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

OK, I will run CheckSUR again.

However, I just ran sfc (screenshot attached). A copy of the CBS log attached. I searched the log for "FAIL" , "Cannot repair" , "0x80070057" and "0x80070002" with nothing found the logfile. I also tested the update by installing Silverlight. Windows Update works fine.

What am I missing???

I have to admit to surprise that SFC didn't find anything wrong - but please run the CheckSUR scan and post the results. It looks at things a different way, and may find many errors that SFC doesn't look for.

Sorry - I missed your later post.

CheckSUR found and fixed a number of errors

I just realised - the results are from your earlier CheckSUR scan - and not anything more recent that your system mods (they are dated 24th April)

Please ensure that you upload the new CheckSUR results.
