Corrupted System Files? Can't copy and paste and more.

Hi,

I am using Windows 10 and lately I have been having issues with system file / windows update corruption (or so I believe). It all started when one of my external hard drives got stuck loading so that I could display its contents and I could copy and paste things from my download folder to else where I wouldn't be able to. In fact the external drive would make it so that my computer would get forever stuck attempting to restart, and I thought this was my windows 10 so I did some things that perhaps I shouldn't have done in order to try to resolve that (I will get to those later).

Anyways here are the error I get when copying and pasting a file:

"1 Interrupted Action"

An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the folder. If you continue to recieve this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.

Error 0x80090005 Bad Data.

I found a few results relating to this error, but no solutions specifically for copying and pasting in windows 10. Most seemed to have to do with web server.

So I try running command prompt as an admin and trying sfc /scannow; the final paragraph states:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.

The CBS.log file is attached. I find a google result that recommends I download and try SFCFix (where it recommended me to this website if it fails), here is the result:

Image Version: 10.0.10586.0

[==========================100.0%==========================]

Error: 0x800f081f

The source files could not be found.
Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see Configure a Windows Repair Source.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Then I try dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth which tells me:

The component store is repairable.
The operation completed successfully.

And then I try dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth :

Error: 0x800f081f

The source files could not be found.
Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see Configure a Windows Repair Source.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

And that's where I'm at now. Since two of these resulted in a dism.log, the second one is dism2.log.

I should mention that I did two things to my computer prior when I noticed the copy & pasting error in order to resolve the error where I could not restart my computer. Those are 1) I Updated my BIOS using a flash drive because one website recommended that 2) I deleted some "Bad Registry Entries" according to this website: http://www.drivethelife.com/windows-10/fix-reboot-loop-after-windows-10-update.html. I did save the registries prior to deleting them, so I will try restoring them after going to learn more about the "source" from microsoft as /restorehealth recommends.

FYI... For some reason I cannot attach any attachments; the attachment manager is not working for me. Possibly related to the copy and pasting. I will try to find another way to give you all the text files, sorry for the inconvenience.

It looks like I can attach some files... but not the log files that I want to attach. What do you recommend I do? Maybe shorten the log files and try to attach those?

Attachments

Okay it appears that the problem was that the log files were indeed way too long; I shortened them to the last 5,000 lines or so. Both dism logs appeared to be the same so I only attached one.

Update: I undid the most recent changes I did to the registries and the problem still persist.
(The ones I changed in order to attempt resolve the problem with my computer restarting mentioned above)

Also here is my entire CBS folder in an attachment, as the "Windows Update Forum Posting Thread" recommends. Otherwise I do believe I have followed the rules close enough and this thread will get a response within 72 hours? I saw this thread got "moved" but I don't know where to, if I need to resolve something in terms of this thread I don't know what it is. Luckily I can still drag and drop so I can still function while I patiently wait!

Hi thePorkPork :)

My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue. From your CBS.log, I can see that Windows only report a single corrupt payload, which is a shortcut to Windows Media Player, so I doubt that this is related to your copy/paste issue.

Are you trying to copy/paste files from your external HDD to your computer HDD, or your computer HDD to your external HDD?

Hi Aura!

No, I'm actually trying to copy and paste from my solid state drive (C drive) to my hard disk drive (Z drive) within the same computer. I am able to copy and paste within the same drives. However I also just noticed that I can sometimes copy and paste between the two drives, for example I can copy and paste the SFCFix.exe from my Downloads folder on my C drive to the root of Z drive but it doesn't work for specific folders within the Z drive.

I would like to see if your external hard drive is failing. Follow the instructions below on it please.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:
  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe;
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

Hi again,

So it appears that I might be choosing poor names for the folders that I was attempting to copy and paste to. For example "WindowsApps" (which I was putting useful executables in such as windirstat) which appears to share the name of an important folder back in the C drive. Duh... I should have figured... anyways that doesn't change that sfc and sfcfix both appear to be having problems / stating that my system is corrupt but they cannot resolve it (still the same as above); I just reran them and got the same errors. Also I'm a little skeptical that that really is the accepted errors when attempting to create folders that have names of important system folders and then attempting to put things in said folders? Shouldn't it just be "access denied" or something?

Edit: I was typing this as you posted, I'll do what you said now.

Hi Aura,

Here is the screenshot attached.

I ran the test three times on each of my drives.

The top right is probably the one of interest; it is the HDD (Z Drive) that I was trying to paste to. Btw nothing was covered up UDMA CRC Error Count.

The top left is my C drive; my SSD.

And I threw in my external drive at the bottom; it if anything I would except to be failing because it is older than the computer by two years however I wasn't try to paste to it so I don't think it concerns us.

Aside from the external drive both of the drives are only about half a year old...

There's something odd with your SSD. What brand is it?

Hi there :)

Can you download and install Hard Disk Sentinel, please: Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring

Tell us what HDS states about the SSD on the Overview tab, status, condition, TRIM status and whether it's active, etc.

Check through the SMART tab and compare with what GSmartControl lists, also check the naming of the different SMART numbers, there are some #s that are vendor-specific, some monitoring software might use a completely different name than others, without access to the vendor's lists, we won't know which, if any, are correct. Post up some screenshots as well, please.

Yes, and you can see that for some of the SSD values, there are several marked "Vendor specific", we don't know what they refer to with this drive - but they don't appear to have been changed from defaults anyway - good thing!

Can we see a screenshot of the SSD and the Overview tab of HDS, please?

I believe this is what you wanted? A screen shot of the the SSD overview tab and as well as the HDD?

Hi everybody. :smile9:

Are you publishing web pages from your PC?
Try this command from an elevated command prompt:
Code:
sc qc webmanagement && sc query webmanagement && sc qc webclient && sc query webclient
I get:

Hello,

This is very weird because I could have sworn I replied to this over a week ago. Anyways, what I said was that I am not publishing web pages from my PC and that command was not found.

It seems the first service was present in Win10 (1511?) before the anniversary update, in fact I don't have it anymore (I updated Windows on September the second).

Retry with this:
(sc qc webclient && sc query webclient & sc qc mrxdav && sc query mrxdav & sc qc WinHttpAutoProxySvc && sc query WinHttpAutoProxySvc) | findstr /i /v /c:"0x" /c:"tag"
Output:

Ah, that one worked.
