[SOLVED] Corrupted Files Can't Be Fixed

I'm helping a friend with a Windows 7 system that "worked fine last night". Normal boot progresses to the login screen, clicking on the user name results in a black screen with the cursor, occasional instances of the spinning wheel. There are no System Restore points. The only usable Safe Mode option is with Command Prompt, "normal" Safe Mode and "with networking" come up with black screen and "Safe Mode" in the corners, there is no graphical UI available.

Chkdsk through the command prompt discovered a couple dozen issues which it "fixed". SFC and SFCFix both found problems they could not repair. The CBS directory is at

Hello and welcome!

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

There's the problem: the desktop never appears either in normal boot or Safe Mode. The only access into the system is Safe Mode with Command Prompt. I can download the files to a second system here and carry them via USB memory stick to the problem computer, but I don't know what to do with them there.

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.

2. Copy it to your USB drive.
3. Boot to recovery environment.
4. Launch CMD and launch FRST64.exe from the USB.
5. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
6. Press Scan button.
7. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the USB)
8. Please attach the log back here.

Please note that there is no guarantee that I will be able to help you, but I will try.

Thank you, you've already provided a big help. I was able to run SFCFix with script from the Safe Mode command line using a hint from niemiro in this post and it seems to have replaced the corrupted files.

The good news:
  1. I now have a desktop in basic Safe Mode.
The bad news:
  1. There is no desktop in Safe Mode with Networking
  2. Normal system boot gets as far as the Welcome screen. This is followed by a black screen with cursor. There is quite a bit of disk activity but the screen does not change.

The current CBS.log is too big to attach, it's located at WeTransfer: WeTransfer
This is the FRST.txt file

There are several errors in the Event Viewer. These are shown towards the bottom of the addition.txt file:

Any ideas? Since the file corruption issue seems to be solved should I open a new thread in Windows 7?

I had forgotten about Safe Boot. Some time spent de-activating services indicated the remaining problem was caused by one of the McAfee programs. For now I've just turned the whole thing off pending a complete removal and re-install.

The system is booting normally now, thank you Very Much!
