corrupt manifests, windows update won't work, now apphelp.dll is bad?

I believe this started on Friday when I inadvertently shutdown my PC in the middle of it installing some Windows Updates. Could have happened earlier in the day; my VMWare Workstation VM (guest) hung and I couldn't shut it down, nor even kill the process. After that things started bogging down, so I decided to reboot. Upon reboot (the host/laptop, not the VM - not worried about that so much) I started getting these "apphelp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error" messages on almost every app startup.

So I tried sfc /scannow and that reported that it could not fix the files. Then I read about SURT, so I downloaded the latest and ran that. Completes its run, but nothing seems to be any better. Windows Update reports some KBs that need to be downloaded and installed, but it fails everytime. Chkdsk ran fine; no filesystem errors.

Tried replacing the apphelp.dll files and their manifests from my desktop with the same Windows build. Didn't help at all (very surprised).

This is my first go-around with trying to look at a CBS.log or SURT.log, but it would appear to me that a bunch of cached packages and manifests got corrupted somehow. I even started to investigate the Win7 Repair (Upgrade) path, but for whatever reason it keeps complaining about the x64 not matching the x64 that I have installed (it's obviously screwed-up), and I can't run the upgrade from booting from the DVD, because Windows doesn't let you upgrade unless you are running it from within the current OS. :(

I tried installing "Fix It Tool 50202" to "reinstall windows update", including checking the "Run agressive options", and that didn't do anything (except lose my update history for the most part).

Anyway, I'm really at my wit's end here. I would desperately like to NOT have to re-install from scratch, so if anyone has any wisdom to impart, I've tried as much as I could find with Google....I would appreciate any help.

This is Win7 x64 "Ultimate" with SP1 on a HP "Envy" laptop. I am attaching my latest SURT.persist.log and CBS.log to see if anyone thinks they can help...please!

Thank you in advance!

Tried to follow the SFCFix instructions for large CBS files/folders, and it appeared to run, but I don't see the files auto-attached to my post. Please let me know if I need to re-upload them and how?

Thanks again,
AJ

Uploading "CBS.log". The zip of my entire \Logs\CBS dir is huge, but I can try and get that together as well, if needed.

Thanks again,

I've collected some of the missing manifests and catalog files here: checksur.zip

Extract the zip somewhere you can easily locate the files, then copy the CheckSUR folder inside (which should contain a packages and manifests folder) to C:\Windows\Temp\ and run the System Update Readiness Tool again (for more details check here: How to fix errors found in CheckSUR.log).

When that completes, attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log with your reply.

Thanks for the initial swipe at this!

Did as you instructed. Let me know what you think?

Hi aweber -

Please do the following to fix your corruption/missing files.

Step#1 - Fix Corrupt/Missing Files
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files). If the Manifests folder doesn't exist within Winsxs you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests
  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files). If the Packages folder doesn't exist within Servicing you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages
  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, zip up and attach the following log file:
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

I know you didn't ask, but after reboot the same apphelp.dll error message still appears (seems to indicate that file is still corrupt). I ran sfc /scannow again and came up with the attached log. Also filtered that log through the notes from KB929833 to see which files are still corrupt. That filtered text is also attached. Some of the lines that I noticed are:

The CheckSUR looks good.

Code:
Summary:
Seconds executed: 351
 Found 274 errors
 Fixed 274 errors

The next step was going to be to do what you did (sfc /scannow). Good thinking!

Please do the following to fix the remaining corruptions.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - Run SFC /Scannow again
Go ahead and run SFC /Scannow again and provide me a current CBS.log

Thank you.

EDIT...
Looking at the log, it seems that those could be expected results, and that pop-up error is what I see (often) when running other programs -- and is the primary, day-to-day reminder that Windows is messed-up. So I ran SFC /SCANNOW and it did run to completion and said it repaired files. Going to zip and attach the log to the next post.

Looking good. This should fix your remaining issues.

Thank you.

Hmm. I did as you said (logs below), then rebooted and did NOT get the apphelp.dll error on startup (usually trillian.exe causes it). That's a good sign!

Please advise if I should try running Windows Update (because that consistently failed all the past week or so as well)?

I thought we were there!!! :)

8 Found, 8 Failed :(

Code: 8024200D

(Happy to look for other error/log info regarding this, just LMK where to look.)

That's actually a good error believe it or not. Usually that means you need to manually download those updates and install them. Sometimes the corruption has this affect on pending updates. To test this please download one of them from Microsoft and install manually. I would provide the links to them but I'm not sure which eight they are.

Thanks.
