I believe this started on Friday when I inadvertently shutdown my PC in the middle of it installing some Windows Updates. Could have happened earlier in the day; my VMWare Workstation VM (guest) hung and I couldn't shut it down, nor even kill the process. After that things started bogging down, so I decided to reboot. Upon reboot (the host/laptop, not the VM - not worried about that so much) I started getting these "apphelp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error" messages on almost every app startup.
So I tried sfc /scannow and that reported that it could not fix the files. Then I read about SURT, so I downloaded the latest and ran that. Completes its run, but nothing seems to be any better. Windows Update reports some KBs that need to be downloaded and installed, but it fails everytime. Chkdsk ran fine; no filesystem errors.
Tried replacing the apphelp.dll files and their manifests from my desktop with the same Windows build. Didn't help at all (very surprised).
This is my first go-around with trying to look at a CBS.log or SURT.log, but it would appear to me that a bunch of cached packages and manifests got corrupted somehow. I even started to investigate the Win7 Repair (Upgrade) path, but for whatever reason it keeps complaining about the x64 not matching the x64 that I have installed (it's obviously screwed-up), and I can't run the upgrade from booting from the DVD, because Windows doesn't let you upgrade unless you are running it from within the current OS.
I tried installing "Fix It Tool 50202" to "reinstall windows update", including checking the "Run agressive options", and that didn't do anything (except lose my update history for the most part).
Anyway, I'm really at my wit's end here. I would desperately like to NOT have to re-install from scratch, so if anyone has any wisdom to impart, I've tried as much as I could find with Google....I would appreciate any help.
This is Win7 x64 "Ultimate" with SP1 on a HP "Envy" laptop. I am attaching my latest SURT.persist.log and CBS.log to see if anyone thinks they can help...please!
Thank you in advance!

PS: Tried to attach CBS.log.zip, but it would not upload for whatever reason. It is over 13MB (zipped), so maybe there's a size limit? Please let me know if there's more information anyone would need or the best way to upload that file!
