Hi all

I have recently acquired a laptop and installed 77 updates for Windows 8 Grrrrrrrrr.
and after days of hassle finally managed it.
Everything was running pretty well and when i checked today for updates i see there
is another 14 Grrrrrrrrrr. I went to control panel and tried to access the updates and
all the functions hang and i have to shutdown via Ctrl-Alt-Del and then sign out which is the
only way to remove the hanging problem.
Control Panel......System and Security
Windows firewall.... hangs
Windows Update ... hangs
Resolve issues as admin (says its stopping Bits then .......hangs)
I cannot get to Windows updates any other way as when i try to go to the update
website it tells me i must use the facility installed in Control Panel GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Can Anyone help please

Regards

Hi jcgriff2.
Thanks for your quick response, i do appreciate it.

I have had several issues with the laptop over the 3months i have had it and have done a refresh
twice which forced me to download all the updates again and returned my laptop back to factory settings.
I find this a real pain and am reluctant to go that route anymore and i intend getting an external hard drive
and using it like a system restore facility (if that's possible) as well as a back up.
However, i did some searching and came across some other options which i tried whilst waiting for a reply
from Sysnative and I think I managed to get it all back to normal except Windows Defender which is greyed out
and will not let me change the settings.
When i bought the laptop it came with Norton which i removed with the removal tool and installed Avast, Malwarebytes, Ccleaner, Belarc etc.
The info I found which I think fixed the problem was a 'Clean Boot' and after following the instructions was able to get the Windows
Updates operation and I downloaded 18 Updates successfully.
Thanks a million for your help and will try to reactivate Windows Defender using your advice.

Kind regards

Hi jcgriff2.

I have tried several ways to activate Windows Defender but no luck.
It is still greyed out and when i click to start the programme it quickly reverts back to manual
and greys out and a message comes up (the programme started and then stopped until needed)
I am not sure if that is what is suppose to happen but all is well otherwise.

Cheers and best regards
