Hello,

I have posted here about this problem in the past but it has returned. Basically I am getting really bad driver latency times mainly due to my network card, I believe. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate any help you folks could provide to help me troubleshoot and diagnose my audio constantly cracking/popping. Like I said, I think it is driver latency from my network card but I would like to confirm there aren't any other problems.

  • System Manufacturer? Dell / Alienware
  • Laptop or Desktop? Laptop
  • Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) Alienware 17 R3
  • OS ? (Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista) Windows 10 Home
  • x86 (32bit) or x64 (64bit)? 64bit
  • Service pack? Version 1803
  • What was original installed OS on system? Windows 10
  • Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? OEM
  • Age of system? (hardware) Purchased July 2016
  • Age of OS installation? since 4/30/2018
  • Have you re-installed the OS? Yes
  • CPU Intel Core i7 6700HQ @ 2.6GHz
  • RAM (brand, EXACT model, what slots are you using?) unknown
  • Video Card Integrated: Intel HD 530 - Full GPU: Nvidia GTX 970M 3gb dedicated
  • MotherBoard - (if NOT a laptop)
  • Power Supply - brand & wattage (if laptop, skip this one)
  • Is driver verifier enabled or disabled? disabled
  • What security software are you using? (Firewall, antivirus, antimalware, antispyware, and so forth) used to use Webroot, am now simply using Windows Defender
  • Are you using proxy, vpn, ipfilters or similar software? no
  • Are you using Disk Image tools? (like daemon tools, alcohol 52% or 120%, virtual CloneDrive, roxio software) no
  • Are you currently under/overclocking? Are there overclocking software installed on your system? Possibly? I have intel speedstep turned on in BIOS to "speedboost" my cpu while gaming. This was on by default, processor is slowed when not turned on.

Let me know if I can provide any more information to resolve this.

Thank you for your time and effort, I really do appreciate this forum.

I should also mention I will have periods wherein the dpc latency is extremely bad, then other days with no issues. I cannot pin down what is changing the performance. Also, the inside of the laptop is clean and I actually just sent it in for a cleaning/repair at a store so I believe it is in good condition hardware wise. A brand new sound card was installed during that time.

Be sure that your audio and networking drivers - both Ethernet and wifi - are updated.

Go to Device Manager (devmgmt.msc); go to the appropriate area; double-click on the item; click on "driver" tab.

This will give you the driver name.

Then look up the driver name in the DRT - Driver Reference Table (DRT)

There will be an update link. Update the drivers.

I would also update video.

Also, check your system manufacturer's support site for any BIOS updates.

Thank you for responding. I have made sure to update all of my drivers to their latest versions and my BIOS is also running the latest version (1.4.4). I am still encountering issues. Do you think it is a hardware issue at this point?

Hi!

Does the issue persist in Clean Boot mode? Please try it and let me know.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows

The problem seems to persist even while doing a clean boot. Also, I'm not sure if this is related or not, but I am unable to update my BIOS to the latest version currently. I noticed on Dell's support site that there is a new BIOS update available but every time I attempt to update this it shuts down my PC and no changes are made. https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/servicetag/cnjwfc2/drivers

I would just send it in to Dell at this point but my warranty has expired. Thanks for your continued support.
