[SOLVED] Confusing and Erratic Windows Update Behaviour

Hi, I hope someone can help.

I'm not really sure where to start with this as the problem has got increasingly complicated in the last few days.

I have a Dell Studio 17 laptop running Windows 7 Premium x64. A week ago, Windows Update suddenly decided to download and install 11 patches, mostly hotfixes. What was odd was that most of these hotfixes were dated 2011/2013. They appeared to install successfully, but afterwards the laptop stuck on "configuring updates..." for over a hour and a half, which
has never happened before. Finally it rebooted and everything seemed to be working normally. However, on checking Update History one update called "Update for Windows",
which wasn't inlcuded in the original list of updates, was classified as "failed to install", with the error code 80244019.

I asked for advice on SevenForums and was asked to run a scan with MBAM, which didn't find anything, and then to run SURT and post the accompanying logs (I can post them here if necessary).
Although the logs didn't seem to show anything seriously wrong, Update has been acting very oddly since last night.
Whenever I run a manual check for updates, it says I'm up to date. But last night, and this evening, Update has spontaneously appeared in my system tray. Every time it says it's "downloading updates", then vanishes after a brief period, only to reappear and recommence downloading.

After an hour or so it finally finished downloading. The downloads are all "failed" and are three copies of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. driver update for AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series" all with the error code 80200010. Update also indicates there are two optional updates: one is an Intel Management Interface from 2013 and the other is a RealTek PCIe GBE family controller from 2011/2013.

I have no idea why Update has started doing this - it's never happened before. The admin who'd been advising me suggested I ask here as they couldn't help me any further and reckoned I have 'major problems', so any advice would be greatly appreciated (sorry for the extra long post).

EDIT: Added the log files: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resi...int=file%2czip

Hope that helps. The admin from sevenforums recently got back saying they'd sent me the wrong reply, so things might not be as bad as I thought. The two older optional updates I mentioned in the previous post have disappeared. So far, the only new update has been a failed Windows 10 upgrade, which doesn't surprise me as I haven't reserved a copy.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Can you please upload the following:

Windows Update Log

  1. Click on the Start button -> Inside the search box copy and paste the following command
    cmd /c copy %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\WindowsUpdate.txt"
  2. Please go to your desktop and attach WindowsUpdate.txt to your next post

Hi Go The Power,

Thanks for the reply. I tried to upload the Windows Update log with the original post but got a message stating the upload exceeds the forum's KB limit (the log is 1.77MB).

Thank you, can you please follow the steps here:

https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...ation-windows-update-validation-problems.html

0x80240020

The following error code x80240020 refers to "ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION", which translates to the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. In order to fix this error message please follow the steps below:
  1. Please open up a command prompt Window as a administrator, instructions for Windows 7 or Windows 8 and 8.1.
  2. Inside the command prompt window enter in the following commands:
    net stop wuauserv
    ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download DL.bak
    ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DS.bak
    net start wuauserv
    wuaucault /updatenow
**Please note, your windows download history list will be reset when you run the above commands**

Wait a few minutes, once windows has advised all updates have installed you should hopefully have a message saying "Your upgrade to Windows 10 is ready".

If the above doesn't work follow the below steps:
  1. Open up a new Notepad file (Press the Windows Key button on your keyboard and the R button -> Type in Notepad -> Press Ok)
  2. Enter in the following text into the notepad file:
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]
    "New Value #1"=dword:00000000
    "AllowOSUpgrade"=dword:00000001
  3. Click on File -> Save, name the file win10fix.reg and in the dropdown box for 'Save as type' select All Files (*.*). Save the file on your desktop.
  4. Go to your desktop and double click on win10fix.reg, press Yes on any prompts.
  5. Restart your PC and try and upgrade again.

Hi Go The Power,

Thanks for the reply. What puzzles me about this error code is that I'm getting it daily even though I haven't reserved a copy of Windows 10 and hadn't been planning on upgrading yet.
If I follow the above steps and the update becomes available, will it force me into reserving and upgrading to Windows 10?

Hello again,

You can 'opt in' to receive the upgrade when you are ready, would you like to reserve your copy now?

One thing you can do is manually upgrade to Windows 10 by downloading the media creation tool from Microsoft, then when you are ready you can just run that?

Hi Go The Power,

Thanks for getting. I don't want to upgrade to Windows 10 yet which is why I haven't reserved a copy yet. Is there a way to stop Windows Update trying to download the "Upgrade to Windows 10 home" automatically until I'm ready to upgrade as I have a string of "failed" upgrades in my History list?

Hello again,

The download wont start for Windows 10 until you ask it to download :).

As for your failed updates lets get these looked at.

SFC /SCANNOW

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with the rest of the steps.

Convert CBS.log to CBS.txt

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button => Inside the search box copy and paste the following command:
    Code:
    cmd /c copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  2. Press Enter
  3. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt, please rename this file to CBS_{Insert forum username here}_{insert todays Date here}.txt For example "CBS_Go The Power_1803.txt"
  4. Please upload CBS_{Username}_{Date}.txt to this thread.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or One Drive

Hi Go The Power,

Thanks. I've got the cbs txt file on my desktop but am unsure how the date should be written when renaming it - if the file was created today, would I type 1008?

Thanks Go The Power,

Here's the log - I had to zip it to get it to fit, hopefully that's ok. I should have mentioned in the last post that the error messages all seem to be the 80240020 ones. Is there a way to stop Windows 7 trying to download the Windows 10, or is it easier to download it and then decline the offer once it's downloaded?

Thank you.

Download and Run SFCFix

Please download and run SFCFix from >Here<

It will take about 15 minutes to process. Once the scan has completed a notepad file will launch with the results. Please copy and paste the entire contents of the results and post them back into this thread. Please put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Thanks Go The Power,

I submitted a similar log report on SevenForums about a week ago and an admin said I should disregard SFC errors linked to KB3068708 as it causes false mis-matches. I tried reading the log but it doesn't make any sense to me, though I did see a few references to KB3068708. Were there other errors in the SFC that need fixing?

Hi Go The Power,

Sorry for the delay. Here's the SFCFix log.
I know you asked for tags but I wasn't sure where to put them as the log contained very little text. If you still need them, please tell me where they should go.

Hi SiliconChipmunk -

I'm going to step in for Go The Power as something came up and he won't be able to finish this issue with you. There have been many driver updates coming out in preparation for Windows 10 upgrades so I'm not surprised that you started getting these.

Can you review with me which specific updates you are trying to install that won't? What are the KB numbers of those updates?

Thank you.

Hi BrianDrab, thanks for letting me know what's happening.

The only update I'm having issues with is the one called "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home". Every time Windows Update checks for updates, this upgrade attempts to install but always fails with the error code
80240020. This isn't a huge issue as I don't want to upgrade from Windows 7 yet, and wish there was a way to get it to stop trying to install.
